Getting Creative In Order To Make Skates Fit .....

Recommended Posts

Just thought I would throw this out here to see if anyone has any ideas:

Has anyone made an inner boot for a skate in order take up extra space (mostly depth, length and around the heel) so that it fits correctly? If so what did you make it of (foam, gel, rubber, neoprene)?

Long story short, I cant find a pair of skates that fit and no-one will make me custom skates based on my foot measurements (I wear Jr sizes), so I have to get creative.

Thanks.

I wonder if hockey blades on speed or figure skates would work .... j/k *sigh*

You could try a neoprene ankle brace if the heel is too loose.

And Graf may have a skate based on a narrower last.

i have heel slop in my 9k's. i cut the front half off of a tick pair of socks and were it over my regular hockey socks. i then tape them on my foot so they will stay and make my heel thicker without taking up volume in the front of the skate. works great just a pain to put on. but i love the skates so until they break down i'll do it.

A guy I used to play with cut beer koozie in half a put it between the top of his foot and skate tongue. He did it because he got lace bite, and to add a little protection from shots.

This would presumably take up some space to cut down on volume.

I'm sorry, this may sound stupid but do JR sizes not fit? Or are they not available?

I was thinking the same thing. If the junior skates fit then just buy juniors.

Im borderline Jr/Sr, depending on the brand e.g. Mission Jr 5.5 (Sr starts at 6)

I currently wear Jr skates, however, I havent been able to find a pair that are wide enough without being overly sloppy. Ive grown tired of shoving my foot into skates that are too narrow (the sharp shooting pain I get when I first slide my foot into my skate is making me think this isnt a good thing to do long term) , so I thought id have a go at skates that are mostly wide enough but a size too big (hence wanting to use something to fill the sloppy parts out).

If anyone is curious:

Left: (the little foot is wider than the big foot)

length: 23.3 cm

width: 9.6 cm

Right:

length: 24.6 cm

width: 9.3 cm

I dont think my feet are that atypical. Just a bit shorter than they should be, especially for my height (5'6")

Supremes are the closest skate I have found to fitting (wide toe box), but they still need to be a bit wider in the mid foot and narrower at the heel. These are what I plan to use as a base.

I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that Bauer customs skates go as small as a 4 or 4.5.

My LHS asked and apparently the cut off for customs is size 5 and Im a 4 :/

Have you tried easton? wider forefoot, narrower at the heel, sounds like it could work for you. Actually, it sound like a really good option for you.

Have you considered getting your Supremes punched out around your midfoot?

Have you considered RBK skates? I think most if not all Reebok skates have lace locks which allow you to keep the lower foot not as tight, but as tight as you like around your ankles.

Good luck!

Outside of punching out skates or molding them, you really don't want to monkey too much with making a skate fit. A skate that doesn't fit properly will not only affect your skating but it could lead to muscle/soft tissue injuries over time.

The u+ looks interesting, if it doesnt have ankle pockets, it may suit my oversized misplaced ankle bones. Does it have a wide toebox like supremes?

The biggest problem here is that shops are reluctant to order things in for me to try because they may end up being stuck with stock they cant sell. Hence having to make something fit

Then you need to take a little vacation. To Canada.

It looks like it. I do worry, about how easy it will be to find a store that stocks a wide range of skates in sizes 3.5-4.5.

My LHS has given up and is stroppy about their distributer not taking back the skates they ordered for me to try on (which are a 1/2 size larger (at least) than what I recommended they order in the first place!)

To be honest, Im surprised that they even tried. They are great in that respect and its a shame that they are stuck with $800 skates (graf 707) that no one is going to buy.

Unfortunately, my LHS cant punch/stretch skates (they can bake for $50), I found someone who managed to do something for me in the ankle department, its not brilliant, but it makes it possible to use the skates as long as Im not doing a lot of edge work
