Waxed Laces

Recommended Posts

Hey...I got my skates sharpened today and I figured while I'm at it I'd buy new laces. I've always had the ones that were on them when I got them, and they are way too long. I've had to wrap around the ankle and I know that is a no-no. I got 96" waxed laces and I have to say...they are great (only skated in them once mind you). Tighter fit than I've ever had with a pair of skates.

I had never even heard of waxed laces before this board, so thanks guys!

well... waxed laces are good, but they really FU*KING (sorry that i use such a language, but its needed) hurt on my fingers, cause they are 'stiff and hard' not smooth like non waxed... i got disgusting red stripes on my fingers because they cut into the fingers...

like here (Accord)

:o

ouch, dude how tight are you lacing up your skates? thats insane.

well if i lace them up loosely, i cant stand straight in them, i dont have the right feeling in my skates and im standing kinda 'kinked' in them (you know like little kids on ice at open sessions) but not SO extreme...

i hope you know what i mean

Apparently it cuts off circulation. And Zak, if you have to tie your skates so tight that they cut your fingers, your skates are definitly a size too big or in a width too wide. Accord only had his fingers cut because the laces were wet apparently. I've never had a problem with waxed laces myself.

Why is wrapping laces around your ankles a no-no?

It also creates direct pressure on the base of the tendon guard causing it to break down prematurely.

I use waxed laces, never remember using any other kind of laces before them. They definetely tie up tight, but when you first get them its like trying to knot a rock..

Waxed laces are awesome, the only time I hurt my fingers tying them up was when I had them baked. They were the ones that came on the old easton ultra-lite 03. The graf ones have never hurt my fingers though.

Is there an easy way to tell when they need to be replaced. Mine have lost a bit of their "waxiness" but they still do up nice and tight.

No tears, or rips in them.

For me it's usually time to replace when they get a rip, tear or the ends fall apart. They don't last more than a couple of months.
