Flex Question

Recommended Posts

You know how I figured out my flex? I played with a 77 flex for one session and ended up loading the stick flex while making simple cross ice passes. I sold it and got a stiffer stick until I found one that no longer did that. Thats the stick you want to keep.

Well, after breaking my 87 flex One95 and going back to my Titanium 100 flex, my shots seemed the same I just had to put more effort into my shot with my Mission.

We need a facepalm emoticon.

Why?

That's the difference between an 85 and 100 flex

Ernie Capadino: Nice retort. Tryouts are in Chicago. It's a real league, professional.

Kit Keller: Professional - baseball?

Ernie Capadino: Mmm-hmm. They'll pay you 75 dollars a week.

Kit Keller: We only make 30 at the dairy.

Ernie Capadino: Well then, this would be more, wouldn't it?

100 > 87. So yes, more effort would be required to flex the 100 than to flex the 87.

Well, of course, but I would have thought my shot would've suffered going to a higher flex. See I'm only 150lbs so a 93ish flex(2in ext.) would seem to be too much for me by the flex to weight ratio. So I don't really get why my shot velocity doesn't vary as the 80ish flex ) One95 seems a lot more appropriate for my weight. Maybe you can help me out?

Without seeing you shoot there's no way to know what you "should" use. There is the possibility that both sticks are too stiff, hence the lack of difference between the two flexes. Using sticks from different brands and models also makes it hard to compare from one to the other.

I'm about 6'4 BTW 17 yrs old. With my One95 it felt way too whippy at first and it felt like a noodle, but i got used to it. I can't imagine using a lower flex. I can feel my Mission kick a little bit on my wrist shots and a decent amount when I had my Bauer.

Ok, that explains some of it. At this point it's just technique and getting a feel for the performance of the stick itself.

BLKHK - Maybe it has something to do with the taper of your stick. I have found personally that sticks with a low kick-point (X:60) are a little stiffer in comparison to the mid kick-point (ONE95) sticks, at a given flex. If the 87 flex ONE95 (mid kick-point) felt too whippy, and the 100 flex TItanium (low kick-point) felt too stiff, maybe you should try switching the flexes.

EX:) 100 flex ONE95. 87 flex X:60 or 85 flex TItanium.

Once again, this is just what I have come across personally. The actual facts behind this comparison could totally negate my finding, but I'm just trying to help you out the best I can. Chadd/others feel free to correct me.

Despite my best efforts, I just sold a 102 flex to the father of a 12 year old. :o

EDIT: The 12-yr old will be the one using the stick.

Eh, I used those around the same age. I remember trying to get an Easton convex aluminum shaft (silver/grey w/blue writing) and the guy wouldn't sell it to me, saying it was too stiff. He called it a gorilla flex and finally caved to selling it to me, presumably to teach me a lesson, but I came back to him with it when it bowed out and I needed a new one.

haha i've seen that before, some kids have crazy upper body strength, mines all lower body so i tend to use 65-75 flexes, i like to feel the stick flex without much effort unlike ahriman :) (i'm 6' 155lbs if that helps), you just gotta try and see what works

The thing is, I'm not sure he knew what he was doing. We spent a few minutes in the intermediate section, and he was ready to buy a 67 flex. He then asked me a few questions about the senior sticks, so I showed him the 77 flexes. But the curve was all that mattered to him; he didn't like the curves we had in a 77/87 flex, so he grabbed a 102.

He's gonna cut that stick, and it'll be stiffer than all hell.

Odds are he doesn't know what he's doing and maybe he just wanted the stick his favourite player uses. I dunno, I grew up pre-Int. stick days so it was a junior or senior and that's it. Juniors were shite for me even back then so I stuck with Srs.

Let me guess, none of the curves were big enough?

Haha. He actually wasn't one of those 'back in my time, the sticks had real curves!' kinda dad.

I used to get the guys bitching because my "synergys" didn't have a coffey curve. Did I mention that I didn't have an Easton account at the time?

Kickpoint - where do you get that info from? It's never on any websites that I have seen.

I currently use Sherwood woodies (7000/9950) - anyone know what kickpoint they have?

What does the RM19 have?

(Starting to worry these RM19 sticks wont be right for me...might be too stiff!)

I bit the bullet and picked up a 77 flex Vapor XXV for $60 to go along with my 75 flex 7k and 67 flex XXV. It feels stiffer than advertised (maybe closer to 85 flex), so it'll be an interesting experiment to see how it affects my shots.

I realize nobody's on the edge of their seat with this, but the stiffer flex seemed to help me out a bit. I scored a nice goal and hit a crossbar and pipe. Naslund is kind of open but not too bad. I'm not feeling the loading as much but my shots are definitely harder and several people commented that my shots were much quicker and better. I do need to chop it down 1" or so as I left it a bit long just in case.
