Skates for girlfriend?

Recommended Posts

I would like to take my girl friend skating, she has skated a tiny bit back in public school.

What should I look for when buying her a new pair? She will be going along too.

Should we get the figure skating skates or beginner hockey skates?

I am worried that the first skate might be painful on her feet because of the skates, I really want to avoid this so that she enjoys it and continues skating.

Thanks

On a whim, without knowing anything about my wife's foot, I bought her junior synergy skates and she's liked them. They fit, they are pretty because they were blue, and the boot wasn't too stiff because they were junior.

Yeah get her some retro looking skates, like the old white ones you see in movies - my gf would like that more than Bauer/CCM etc

Find out from her what she wants, first. Ask her if she's rather have figure skates or hockey skates, then go from there. If she doesn't know, take her skating on some rentals first. She can try each, and see what she likes better. There's definately a different feel to each. If she's still learning and you're teaching, hockey skates would probably be a better choice, because you know how to skate in those, and not in figure skates.

As for actually selecting skates, pick the model that fits best in your price range, same as you would for anyone else. My wife plays on a women's team, and there is every different model and price level of skate represented there. You don't want to break the bank on something she might not use, but you also don't want to cheap out and have her be uncomfortable and quit because you decide on a real low quality skate.

Less expensive/lower models tend to be a less stiff, so they might be easier on the ankles. Start there, and see how it goes...

Helping other people buy hockey equipment is almost as awesome as buying it yourself. Convince her to play so you can help her pick out everything else, too, ha.

if shes going with you then get her a pair that fits well, as comfort is really important...

i put my gf in bauers and she didnt like how they hurt her feet when she was skating (her arch). got her a pair of superfeet insoles and she loves them now.

weve been through a few pairs of skates with her too until she decided which ones she liked...just make sure they fit her, bake them, and get her superfeet insoles...a good sharpening is important too...

hope that helps.

i wouldnt go too all out on price, as she probably doesnt need the added protection and other features if all you guys are doing is just going public skating and stuff.

hope that helps.

I'd go with properly sized rentals to see if she really wants to keep on skating. It's one thing to think about it, it's another to fall hard on your ass. I know, as there is now a pair of decent figure skates gathering dust in my basement.

If you're chick is anything like mine, be sure she not only likes the way they fit, but the way they look. I can laugh this off, but asthetics somehow make things comfortable. Good luck on your endeavor!

Yeah, good thing there's no one on here who only buys equipment because of the way it looks...

You must post a picture of your GF before we can make an educated guess about what skates she would need/want. Dont blame me, it is an internet rule

You're probably better off going with some figure or recreational skates. You shouldn't have any problems finding either of those in Toronto.

Yes, Al Gore himself signed it into internet law at the time of creation.

someone suggested renting first, and I totally agree. my gf and I did that, she liked hockey skates so we bought her a pair. then she got confident and wanted to try hockey. mission intake, vapor xxx gloves and an intermediate ST grip later, we were ready for stick n puck. all her choices

My wife started out as a kid on figure skates, then she met me. ;) She would skate on the back yard rink, public skating occasionally. With my daughter getting into hockey 4 or 5 years ago, and with me playing too, she wanted to play too. So, got her jr size Bauer XXV. I guess that's a mid-line skate, but has stiffness, but too stiff, comfort and a good price. I would suggest mid-line, and get them baked. You don't want them too cheap, as the comfort/support won't be there, but you don't want super hi-line either, would be too stiff (like ski boots!), harder to break in and might turn her off.

Is it bad that i read the title as "skates OR girlfriend" and was going to post telling you to get that skates?

First thing I read was, "or," too... and, the first thing to my mind was, "hmmm... which skates is he thinking about..."

+1 my girlfriend once was all about trying to go to public skating sessions so I could teach her how to skate. One bad fall that ended up in her hitting her knee pretty hard, and she will not go anywhere near a sheet of ice. Make sure she really wants to keep skating before you invest anything substantial in it.
