A brilliant idea

Recommended Posts

While stick handling in my basement last night (TPS R8) it felt blade heavy compared to my vector, so after thinking I decided to cut it down, and put in a wood plug. Sure the wood plug helped, but balance points still were no where equal....so I took out the handy dandy drill, and really hollowed out the plug, and then filled it up with tungsten powder, and epoxy. Once the epoxy hardened (so the powder was sealed in the plug) I was in heaven, the balance point really shifted away from the blade, and the puck feels allot better on the blade.

I also have allot of tungsten plugs that I could drill holes for in the plug, an insert them, so you could do an interchangeable balance point deal, by simply taking the plug out, and inserting more plugs, or simply go with heavier ones.

Funny this was a solution to crappy out of balance fishing rods some years ago. The product absolutely did what you claim here, it lightened up the rod tip thus making the rod more balanced in the hand. In some cases, if the rod quality was substantial it also added sensitivity/feel as well.

The Balancer consisted of a rubber cap that could hold 1/2 oz lead disc shaped weights that were supplied with the kit. You could fine tune it by adding quarters or anything else that fit in there as well.

Something to think about. But you had to add quite abit of weight to the end of the rod to balance it, this might be counter productive in a hockey stick considering they weigh substantially more than a fishing rod.

Funny you mention fishing rods, Shimano still uses counterbalancing with their Tiralejo Surf rods. I'm still tempted to pick one up, I'm already thing about the spring striper run...

wouldn't it be easier to take some lead tape and attach it to the inside of the buttend of the stick?

I'm sorry, but if a quarter ounce imbalance bothers you that much, you've got too much time on your hands. The R8 and R10 are fine, they are slightly blade heavy because of extra kevlar in the slash zone. If you honestly notice it while playing, I'd be stunned because I never have.

OT question,

thought i'd post this here even though it's off-topic, but it involves the R8 that some of you seem to have experience with. i have an r8 in whip flex that i find just a tad too whippy, the regular flex 95 was too stiff for me. if i cut the stick down 4-5 inches or so and replaced it with a wood butt end, would that stiffen the stick up a bit? sorry for the threadjack.

Neat idea. I'll mention it to my brother - he's looking for ways to make his one-pieces heavier in general. He feels his cross-checks are lacking.

I would put it under the tape on the outside of the butt end. For me, using a wood plug usually gets me close enough though.

Fill 'em with sand, replace the end plug ;)

Exactly my problem with tps sticks. I can't find a flex that I like lol.

If you fill it halfway with a liquid (sand might work too), then you'll get a nice weight-shifting effect that will make whoever is on the other end of a slash really notice it. I wonder if it would do anything for slappers, too. ;)

Try mixing epoxy and tungsten powder, and pour it down the shaft.....it will add some weight, and to boot, you could control how much you want.

I suppose you could do that too, but there is always a chance it might come loose, but then again a plug could come loose.

Been doing this a while, but a little differently. I cut the stick 4 in shorter than i need, and use a modified wood plug to balance out the stick. I drill out the plug as much as possible and fill it with quikrete almost to the top, and top it off with a layer of epoxy to seal it off. The balance point of the stick is right where my lower hand is. I actually don't notice any increase in weight, the stick actually feels lighter to me.

Sounds like some serious counter balance going on, do you have a better shot? I am playing tonight with the new plug in, just wondering how much of a difference I will feel?

pretty night and day. everything just feels lighter. you don't have that club like felling you normally have with sticks. and its not like i use a cheap ops, i use one95/se16.

So when you put sand in your shaft and it breaks, do you pull out the flip flops and take a walk on the beach you created in the middle of the ice?
