NCPUCK26 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 Anyone here very religious? My family never was, and I never got too into in until after this weekend. I went on a 3 day retreat (called Emmaus), and it seriously changed my life. I just wanted to tell people about it, because i'm so excited, and it's made such a noticable difference, it's the best thing thats happened to me in a very long time. Anyone else had a good expirience with retreats, the church, etc..?? I don't really have any friends that are religious, no one on my hockey team is at all, as a matter of fact, no one i know that plays is, so i wouldn't be surprised if you guys were the same way. Kirsch 1 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I'm an agnostic. So naturally I'm not a very religious person.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I think faith and belief is a very personal thing and shouldn't be ruined by organizations or groups.Organized religion has been perverted and abused by too many people who solely used it to gain power or influence. NashvillePreds 1 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I'm religious (christian school before I moved here 5 years ago), but I never really took on with things like youth groups, and retreats. I agree with ljack that religion is a very private thing, and you shouldn't have to go work in the inner city or out in the woods to feel at peace with God, or whoever you feel as a higher power... NCPUCK26 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I understand what you guys mean, but everyone there helped me to understand what I have in God, etc... and i now have to do it all myself.
foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I agree with ljack to a point, but I think it's an overgeneralization to say that all organized religion has been perverted. Sure, you have some faiths that abound in corruption and scandal...however you spell that...but then you also have some faiths that haven't taken that road.I agree with Preds too, but probably from a little different perspective. If you're doing that stuff to feel at peace with God, then you may be doing the right thing, but for the wrong reason...
Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 Never meant to imply that all are bad, I apologize if that's how it sounded. I have an interesting take on a lot of religion but I really don't feel this is the proper forum for it. Religion is such a personal thing that arguements and fights are often caused simply because people don't share the same basic concepts.
foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I definitely agree with you on that. It's one of the three things you're not supposed to talk about. Politics, religion, and...oh shoot, I always forget the last one..

mack 44 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I go to church for the chicks. Church just ruins the relationship I have with the big JC, not to mention takes up too much time during the week.

Don't forget the perverted gay priests....I am a Catholic, but haven't been to Church in while. I know, it's bad, but $hit happens I guess....Mack-Chicks, at Church? Damn, what religion are you? My Chruches are usually full of 80yr. old saggy Grandmoms...
mack 44 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I'm Catholic, so I guess that's technically a Satanist. There isn't much of a Catholic following here so the ratio's better. It's just easier to scope out potentials when you see how they take their communion.
PiKappaPhi 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 living in the south I have been bombarded by southern foot washin baptists. And now I can fully understand the quote "the main reasons for athiests are christians". I am Catholic, born, raised, and continue to live it as much as I can. To those who think the Church or church in general is a bad thing or negative, talk to all the alcoholics, husbands and wives, the poor, homeless, and people in distress who seek refuge in the Church and see what they have to say. I think the good things that come from the Church far outweigh the few bad things. I can think of 5 people that I know personally who aren't even Catholic yet they still visit my priest looking for help with alcohol abuse or other problems.I am not trying to preach, because I feel that if everyone led a silent spiritual life, things would be much better off. I really do think its the huge hypocrites that ruin it for the rest of us who are quiet and do try and live our lives accordingly. I think its wonderful that someone here has changed, his attitude on life willl change drastically and it can only be for the better. More power to you. well that was fun, not trying to sound condecending at all, just adding my 2 cents.

Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 When we know what God is, we shall be gods ourselves. The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The second one is one of my favorite Shaw quotes. No offense intended to anyone, I just find it funny.
foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 That assumes the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. Not very true in my experience. ;) By the way, who's the first quote from?
Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 Both are George Bernard Shaw, an Irish playwight and de facto philosopher.

Dan_The_Man_16 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2004 Huh, I didn't get that last post. I am sort of religious. I go to Catholic school and pray and stuff. I rarely go to church though, I just figure that if I can talk to God in the comfort of my own home, why go to church?

foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2004 Church isn't exactly all about praying though. I guess I probably shouldn't comment though, b/c I don't know a whole lot about Catholocism..
GekigangarIII 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2004 I'm glad for you NCPUCK it's great to have fellowship and to have new found faith is a very exciting thing! Enjoy it to the fullest! People need to remember that "religion" and "organized religion" or whatever else label they choose to call it has absolutely NOTHING to do with a relationship with God. You don't need church, or religion or anything of the sort. You need a direct relationship with God. Some people find that fellowship gives them strength and is very uplifting. I'm one of those people. However, I know that it is not at all necissary and what is, is my relationship with the big JC. I'm really happy for you NCPUCK! Now, having said all of that, I can't think of a worse place to try and discuss religion... :)but hey, nobody said witnessing was easy!and with that, I'll exit out of this thread as these things always go downhill... the internet/text isn't the best way to talk about this kind of thing and things are always misunderstood..
