NHL Awards

Recommended Posts

This is a tad later than i wanted, but we just passed the halfway mark in the season. Lets see what you think the individual awards go to.

Hart: Ovechkin, his PPG is just rediculous, I know its not about points, but Washington would be a bubble team (if that) without him.

Richard: again, Ovechkin

Art Ross: Thornton, Him and Heatley are an amazing 1-2 punch

Vezna: Its has to be Ryan Miller at this point.

Selke: I couldn't even guess at the moment. i feel like a moron for not knowing, but id say Madden if anyone.

Jack Adams: Lavy, the Flyers have gona on a scoring tear recently, and id have to say its because they finally figured out his system.

Art Ross: H. Sedin

Richard: Marleau

Hart/Vezina: Miller. I hate the Sabres, but it's hard to argue with what he/they have done this year.

Adams: Ruff. Again...it pains me to picks Sabres...but I don't think anyone thoguth they'd be this good.

Selke: Hmm....Marleau has 3 SH goals...which means he is not only an offensive juggernaut...but they have him on the ice to kill penalites as well. I'm going there, flawed as the logic may be.

Calder: I can't really pick 3 Sabres can I? Tyler Myers is playing elite defenceman minutes/situations in this first year in the League. Looks like I can.

Lady Byng: St. Louis. 46G/52P/6PIM.

It's a bit of a homer pick but I think Jimmy Howard really deserves a good look for the Calder. Can't really speak on the rest of the awards, haven't seen enough of the teams play regularly. Sucks having a job with a lot of evening work.

Considering the way the Wings have been milking his rookie status and the Wings potentially not making the playoffs, I'd say definitely no.

It usually goes to freshly drafted rookies that flip a team, put up big numbers, or a goalie that takes a team much nearer to the cup than what the team should have potential for.

There were also plenty of questions about him coming into the season. A lot of people expected the Wings to have to pick up someone else to back up Osgood. At this point of the season I have a hard time picking anyone other than Myers in Buffalo, the kid is averaging more then 23 minutes a night. That's 2.5 minutes more than anyone else on the team.

Semyon Varlamov is 12-1-2 with a 2.21 GAA and .924 SV%

He is skating again now and should be back soon. I would say in terms of rookie goalies, he would be ahead of Howard at the minute. Not to say Howard hasn't been great, because he has, but if Varlamov is back in the next week to 10 days, he will have plenty of games to build on his strong start this season. One regulation in 15 games with 12 wins is a hell of a record

Definately agree with Sacco for the Adams at this point in the season, amazing what he's done with that team. I also agree with Myers for the Calder, he's playing like a seasoned veteran, it's scary to think that he's still growing both physically and mentally.

All my cards on the table...I'm a Ranger fan. How is it that no one mentioned Gaborik for the Hart. He and Lundqvist are the only reasons the Rangers are in the playoffs. Without him, the only thing they would be competing for is the first overall pick.

Hart: Joe Thornton

Calder: John Tavares but I hope James Van Riemsdyk

Adams: Dave Tippet - No one thought Phoenix would have a chance to make playoffs.

Richard: Crosby - Going to be a stretch.

Art Ross: Ovechkin

Vezina: Ryan Miller

As true as that is, the award rarely goes to a player on a non-playoff team and they are not a lock to make the playoffs

It also rarely goes to the player most valuable to his team. Go figure.
