New holders, can't skate now

Recommended Posts

Sorry for being long winded here but....I have a pair of One90's and I finally cracked the ugly blue translucent holder and was forced to buy a set of white Tuuk's. Apparently you can't get the LS2 Power holders anymore so I have regular Tuuk customs now. My old blades were on a 11' profile which is what I got done to the new blades. I tried to skate and it felt like my blades were way to sharp and I almost killed myself when trying to stop. This was possibly because I was too far back on my heels. So, I had the blades re-contoured to a 9 foot profile and they feel better but still feel way too sharp. There was no change to the hollow I was using previously so I figure it must be the new holders. I just can seem to scrape the ice with the blade on stops or pivots.Rather it bites way too much and I almost wipe out. I know the new steel is a bit shorter and taller since it is brand new but I want my old feel back. Any suggestions on what to do? New profile, different hollow????

If you have too much bite, go to a more shallow hollow. It's the easiest and cheapest solution.

I second the shallower hollow- can make a huge difference.

I recently got a new pair of X60s. The store convinced me to try a 5/8 hollow as opposed to my regular 3/4 hollow.

It felt like stopping on velcro - brutal.

I went back to 3/4 right away and it was like butter.

I get that but I didn't change my hollow (FBV 90/75) and the skates are still "velcro like". I will likely opt for a shallower cut but I want to understand why this happened in the first place so I can understand more about skate sharpening, profiling etc BTW what would be a shallower FBV than 90/75?

I guess someone has to ask; Are you sure they gave you the right hollow?

90/50?

+1 I cant skate on anything else

Got to be the radius. A shorter radius will make whatever hollow or FBV you have feel "sharper".

He had that problem on the 11' radius, before he went to the 9'. Unless his old radius had flattened to 12+, it isn't the radius

One other thing, maybe the pitch is different? That make a really big difference for me.

Or maybe they have some alignment irregularity with you new holders on your skates?

Couple of things to check on...

I found that the longer the blade, the shallower I had to go. So 11 or 12 foot I go 3/4 or 7/8" for example

The shorter the radius e.g 9 foot the more defined hollow 5/8" or 1/2" .

The relationship or equation is Radius + 1/RoH = Grip on the Ice

So if I increase my blade edge I have to increase my hollow # to maintain the same grip.

Speed skates are an extrreme example - flat blades, no hollow, but still lots of grip for the skater. Speed skates ride higher to the surface and this improves glide time and efficiency. And you can apply this to hockey. However, they are a bear to accelerate from a standing start and quick directional changes/turning is an issue too. I run flatter and 3/4" which gives me plenty of speed on snowed up ice and in late stages of the game. I love it.

Wouldn't LS2 Holders and 2.1 steel have been closer to your original setup than Custom+ holders/steel?

My LHS said they couldn't get that anymore. I assumed he meant the blue translucent holders that came with my One90's which made sense since that skate is discontinued but I can't seem to keep those straight anyway. I'm going to try the shallower hollow which makes sense since I have a pair of S15's with a 9 foot radius on them and with a 90/75 my feet tend to slide out to the sides a bit more. Sort of frustrating since everything was just perfect before the damn holder cracked. Thanks for the advice.

I second the change in pitch as an issue. Wouldn't the custom plus holders put him much more back on his heels?

When I went from Grafs to XXXXs I had to have them profiled for more forward pitch..it was just as the OP described.

I was talking about the regular LS2 holders, not the clear one's like on One90's. These right here http://www.hockeymonkey.com/bauer-hockey-t...-holder-sr.html

LS2.1 steel I believe is also the same mm length as LS2 Power steel http://www.hockeymonkey.com/bauer-hockey-l...-runner-sr.html

I'm thinking of changing my setup to this in the near future as I recently got new One90's about a month ago and am not digging the clear holders and want to go to white, but I also don't want to lose the feel of the longer runner from the LS Power steel, hence why I suggested 2.1 steel coupled with LS2 white holders.
