Easton Ultra Comp Grip shaft?

Recommended Posts

I was at Sport Chek today (Canada) and noticed an Easton shaft called the "Ultra Comp Grip". It is metallic light blue and appears to have the kevlar wrap and grip surface. The shape best resembles the "Cyclone" and its stats are 8/8/320g. It is $120 or 129 Cdn. Is this a SMU for Sport Chek because I know that they sell a SMU skate also called the "Ultra Comp"?

Heh, I saw it today also while visiting Vancouver (my first time there). I thought that the shaft was a little thicker (bigger diameter) than a Cyclone.

ya its a sport chek smu. its s pretty decent stick actually, even though it does weigh a little more (320 g) its a 90 flex which is nice too because a retail easton 90 is pretty rare.

That was my immediate thought, but if it IS that shaft there's gotta be some serious dust on it. Bring out the chisel!

For the kids who don't know, way back in the late 90's, Easton had 2 composite shafts: The Ultralite (still going strong today) and the Ultra Composite (sharkskin finish comparable to polarfibre).

it looked pretty cool and had a nice grip on it, but that shaft feels really heavy compared to other high end shafts for that price ($129 CDN).

Grip Lites are around $140 CDN. Why not just spend the extra $10 for an overall better shaft?

Nah, it's not an old stick. I don't really know much about it, but I know it has newer graphics, looks like the Z-Bubble and has a really sticky-like grip to it. Just from looking at/feeling the shaft, it seems far overpriced, but I could be wrong.

nope, the A/G was the replacement to the A/C line. I was a fan of the A/G's for a while........

i saw that shaft yesterday, it reminds me of the Easton Ultra Graphite Shaft. It has the same specs of the Ultra Comp (8/8/320 90 Flex) and the same shaft feel but it's green and has no grip.

Prolly is a UG with grip. They're both 90 flex, the only such flex shaft that easton makes.

To whomever wants to get this shaft, DON'T. I think it's crap. The thing weighs a ton and it's 129.00. If the grip thing is what floats your boat, go buy a griplite. The inners are fibreglass which you usually find on lower ened stuff so you might as well spend the extra 10 bucks to get an 85 flex (if you like a bit whippier than 100 as I assume you guys like the 90 flex from the Ultra Comp) stick made with graphite that will be stronger, and lighter. Plus, the griplites come with the better grip that they used on the gold synergies cause I hear tons of people complain about the grip on the z-bubs and syn grip and si-core grips peeling off quite fast. Just my 2 cents.

All Ultra Comp stuff by Easton is an SMU. Im not buying the 129.99 price tag.. I bet it goes down on a big "loss leader" type deal with the next hockey promo they do. Thats what they have done with all their SMU one piece sticks so far this year.

I looked at this again and now I see what others have said about this shaft. It and the Ultra Carbon shafts are labeled "Composite" and ULs and Z-BUbbles are labeled "Graphite" so that there should have been the first clue. And it is heavy.

The Ultra Comp Grip looks like the Z-Bubble (blue) but I doubt it can perform like one. I think its kind of like the Synergy Si-Core and the Carbon 9001 come to think of it. They both look alike but perform differently.

well it's 59.99cdn now, so is it worth it at THAT price?

I'd rather buy an expensive wood stick from Cyclone.

FYI:

I know that this is an old thread (that I started), but I was at Sport Chek today and they now have the 2005 versions of these shafts. There are two versions. They are both "Grip" and one looks like a blue Z-Bubble with a Kevlar weave and theother looks like a silver Z-Bubble with a Kevlar weave. The silver one is called (I think) the Ultra Comp SL and the blue is the Ultra Comp SE. I think the performance rating is an 8 and the weight is about 285 grams.
