Racial slurs

Recommended Posts

So at tonight's game (House League Midget) I crashed the net and some kid elbowed me, I give him a little tap and he says: "Wanna start something chink?" (I'm Chinese) So I slash him again, not 100% sure he said that racial slur and I get called for slashing. At that point I could've done one of 3 things:

A: Full on scrap the kid

B: Immediately go report to the ref

C: Nothing

At the time, I chose C, because I wasn't 100% sure and we were tied 3-3. But looking back I would've definately chosen A, you just cant let some racist SOB say that shit, anywhere...

What do you guys think?

Being a white male of no particular country of origin (mutt,) there isn't much you can say to me about my race to get me going.

That being said, when someone decides to talk shit to me during the game, I don't say anything. I just laugh in their face, see if I can draw a penalty. Get a good hard hit on him, make him look stupid, get a point against him... anything along those lines. If you can control yourself, just make his game a living hell without making your team suffer. Especially in a close game situation like you were in.

I also had a black teammate one season, and if some slur was uttered he wouldn't freak out or change the way he played. He wouldn't report it to the ref himself, but have a captain or coach do it. I think the more you stew on it, the more credence you give this goon and the slur in general. Gotta bring your game above that level.

It depends on the score dude. If its a close game, you just gotta blow that punk off and focus on your game and not let him get to you. Now on the other hand, if your losing pretty bad, I'd knock the shit outta him. Bottomline, its all about the situation your team is in

To me it'd be a dumb thing to fight over. It's rough at the time but just shake it off and be the bigger person. Tell a coach, captain, anyone, or keep mum if you'd like but just don't dwell on it and let it eat at you. If all else fails and you feel the need to drop to the same level, "honkey" always makes me laugh.

Sorry to hear about the racial slur. I'm also non-white and have been on the receiving end of these. It always made me hot tempered and I always went for a big hit on them the next shift.

But if you're playing houseleague midget are you in a contact league because in my town once you reach midget houseleague it become noncontact due to the larger age differeence and sizes. Since midget becomes a mix of 14-17 year olds.

If that is the case be ready with some quick punchlines like 'stop wearing Chinese made gear' lol

And what sucks the most is when the kids teammates start throwing the racial slurs alongside the jackass!

I had a guy do that on my beer league team a few years back. I went off on him and he was not invited back.

If your going to drop a racial slur as the person dropping it you better consider all possibilities before opening your mouth. I am a pretty strong guy with a good temper, however, age has taught me that no matter how righteous the ass kicking your still very alone in your actions. i.e. if I swing on some kid it is most likely me that is going to get more flak then the dude doing the slurring. 99% of the time its better just to walk away and be the righteous man. With that said, sometimes, the ends justify the means, and you just might catch me on a bad day.

I have a good lawyer .....

you should let the ref know what is going on and to listen for any more slurs. I have seen kids get a 5 and game for using slurs.

Regardless of color, relegion, sex, etc as soon as you put on your equipment you are a hockey player, nothing else.

That's really disgraceful. In one of the rinks for beer league play near me, a racial slur brings an immediate ejection and permanent ban, as it should be. There is no place for that nonsense

Sadly, I'm the Worst Hockey Player in America, so I'd welcome someone calling me an idiot rather than pointing out that I cannot skate for shyte...

I'm also Asian and get some random stuff said to be every once in a while. What I've done in the past with people that pissed me off (not just racial slurs but with cheap shots and stuff like that), I would look for that guy to get the puck and then try to lay him out with a clean body check. I play beer leagues now, but if whatever the guy said or did is bad enough I still do this, to me the minor penalty for checking is worth it and if I explain to my teammates they usually understand. If its a close game I try to refrain from doing this though.

Slurs don't make any sense to me, it's just not in my makeup. But for those of you who played higher level competitive hockey, is that crossing the line in trash talk? I would assume so, kind of like teasing someone about a dying mother or something.

A slur crosses the line every time it's mentioned. If you have to resort to that, then you have little business trying to talk crap.

I grew up playing high school hockey at a school where there were 12 black kids out of 1200, one of which played hockey (me lol) and as a whole, growing up in the state I think there were about 17 in my age range ( 77-81 DOB) that played between high school and comp, so I would hear stuff every now and then and just shake it off really. I think I lost it once, but that was about it. As a community all the player ( not just the black kids ) knew each other and would see each other at parties, etc, so it would be unwise to bring shit like that on the ice because it would most certainly end up in an altercation off the ice.

It's pretty pathetic when people aren't interesting/smart/funny enough to come up with good insults and have to go to race. Really though, you got to brush that dirt off your shoulder and move on. But...if you feel yourself about to fight, don't throw a punch just call him a "Kracka ass Kracka" in your best Chris Rock voice. Funny as hell.

As you grow older, guys who utter a slur don't need to only watch out for the guy they direct it at so much as a teammate. Example: a few years ago in a big local tournament, someone in one of the higher level games used the "N" word. One of his teammates heard it and proceeded to beat the snot out of the guy while reminding him to never refer to his teammate with that word again.

I know that is the case with our current team. We have players of both Asian and African descent and I have no doubt that several of our guys would do exactly what you describe.

Thankfully where I play the league is diverse enough that I haven't heard anything. What gets me is (as a ref) players of a minority that try to use it to their advantage. I know one chinese midget player who is notorious for crying wolf. Notorious because he forgets that you've reffed him before and tries to pull the same trick of crashing the net and then jumping out of the scrum screaming "he called me a ch***!" Oh well, some guys just never learn.

On my son's team he has a team mate who is bi-racial. Everyone (parents and players) are very fond of him. He always makes jokes about it (always pick on the black guy, etc) and the players call him thier lil brown bear or hot chocolate (which makes him and his family crack up). He even likes to pick on the white guys. All of it is done out love and good nature. One team mate (the typical team dick) stepped over the line once and the team made sure that he knew it. If anyone on another team was to make a rude comment or slur to him they would definitely pay the price.

Color or race does not make you a bad person it is the person that can give the color or race a bad name.

The rink wannabe badass (every rink has at least one- you know the type) got shut down by our goalie several times (his team was down 3-0) and he just kept trying to go end to end. He got stoned and skated up to our goalie, pressed his shield to the goalies mask and called him a "fu*#ing N!$$er".

Our goalie is a skinny white kid from Minnesota. We also have a black forward, but he was nowhere near the play.

We all laughed.

The irony is that the wannabe badass had recently left his wife for a stripper. With two bi-racial children. I wonder how step parenting goes down in that household.......

WTF?

On the good side we used to have two Mike's on our team. White Mike, and Black Mike. Now we just have Black Mike. He tells me he can tell my wife likes chocolate ice cream. I tell him he looks like Hootie from Hootie and the Blowfish. All is well in the locker room. He grabs my ass a lot though.
