Drank NO Shotgun...

Recommended Posts

I usually drink Meltdown before working out and figured I'd try something before Hockey...NO Shotgun. This stuff is pretty potent. 30 minutes ago I felt kinda "meh" and a little sluggish but I'm bouncing around now, ready to play tonight.

Any of you take supplements before games?

In high school, before games and during intermissions, I used to down a Red Bull or two, and maybe some chocolate covered coffee beans. They worked well at first, but come 2nd intermission, you start to burn out and crash. I wouldn't really recommend caffeine substances while playing, just because of the crash. If your games are short (~1 hour), then you probably could get away with it, but mine were 2-3 hours (3x20 min periods + floods). The carbonation would get me too, if I drank them too close to game time, and cramps would start to kick in.

I've heard that the 5 Hour Energy bottles work and hold up nicely. I don't really see the point in taking a vasodilator, like the NO Shotgun. You don't really need to take a pump-inducing supplement before playing hockey, and it may even hinder performance if one muscle inflates to the point where flexibility is lost, similar to doing a bicep workout and trying to touch your shoulder. In the end, to each their own, and if it works it works. I know I never had much continued success with energy drinks and supplements before hockey.

That is because a serving of NO Shotgun has around 300 mg of caffeine and at least another 100 mg in the form of herbs! Plus creatine which is not the best pregame drink.

Yeah, I learned that last night. Never again. I was up until 4AM, tossing and turning in bed. Started getting a headache around 330.

I'm even considering cutting it out from my workouts. I really dont notice that big of a difference between when I take it and lift, and when I dont take it and lift...the only things I'm gonna take are the Protein shakes post-workout and Glutamine.

You can take arginine and beta-alanine too. Arginine is what gives you that pump, it is a vasodilator this will help increase blood flow and keep feeding oxygen to your muscles. And Beta-alanine is an amino acid that buffers alctic acid. It will keep you from getting the burn in your muscles associated with the lactic acid threshold. The combination does wonders for hockey!

Or buy No Synthesize. It is the same as NO Shotgun without the stimulants.

Is this for Pre-Game only? Or should I consider it for working out as well?

My buddy owns a Supplement company (sales) so he can pretty much get me anything at a great deal. I'll ask him about it.

Jack3d. It helps after not getting enough sleep before a game. Helps me feel "natural". I can only imagine what it would do if I had plenty of rest...

Jack3d got pulled at one point after it was tested and they found amphetamines in it. I believe it was aderol. I worked at a nutrition shop and they called us and asked us to pull it off the shelf while they reformulated the product!

It would be great pre-workout as well! It is the important stuff in the pre-workout drinks on the market minus the stimulants and creatine!

None of the nitric oxide products like no explode are scientifically proven to increase sports performance. Forget what all the supplement companies tell you. The following advice is for adults and you should research more before you try this.... Look at the list of band substances for Olympic athletes if you are looking for things that really work.

Easily attained legal things that I would try are:

normal caffeine, which should last about three hours, pill form like no-doz or drink with known quantity of caffeine. Dosage is dependent on the person and the level of tolerances you have built up. If you think you are crashing from caffeine during a game you either drank it to early or its a sugar crash from the beverage you took it with. Increase your dose slowly until you are getting 200-300 mgs.

Ephedrine. This can be bought over the counter from the pharmacy as a asthma treatment. Ask for broc-aide. Take half the dose at first because it can have some negative side effects with some people. Never exceed the recommended dose. Its not a case of more is better.

You can combine caffeine and ephedrine. 200 mgs of caffeine and 25mgs of ephedrine. If you only use this for games you will feel jet propelled.

If you dont want to mess with these things I have found that spike is the best energy drink available. You can get this at vitamin shoppe.

During play you should hydrate with a sugar protein blend at the ratio of 2:1. A cheap way to do this is lime powdered Gatorade and whey protein powder. Sip between shifts.

I take this before most sessions, in the Gym or on ice training...

image_13090_1.jpg

You can buy it here...

Despite it's name, the rep for Balance recommended I take this as a "primer" before workouts. Its a great supp. Makes me feel like I am already warmed up before I get out there. A combo of Beta-Alanine, Creatine, Caffeine and other amino acids. Mix with some Gatorade and water for best results, drink it about an hr before hitting the weights/ice. No "drop" effect either that you get from Red Bull etc.

After a workout I will generally chug a Mass Gainer type protein supp. Generally a 50:50 Carb to protein ratio.

When I was running my own Gym equip store we would sell out the Recovery Stack with in a week of getting stock in. Highly recommended.

You should be careful about what you say here. At one point you say look at this list of banned olympic substances and then go on to say these are legal supplements. Caffeine yes, ephedrine ehh it is a grey area.. It depends on the source of the alkaloids. But, Ephedrine is banned in every sport that I can think of. Ephedrine is a horrible supplement due to the fact that it is a vasoconstrictor which causes your blood pressure to raise significantly and your resting heart rate to go through the roof! If you want something that will truly help stick with amino acids, beta-alanine, and a good recovery drink 4:1 ratio carbs to protein. If you want to feel like a tweaker and you will since ephedrine is a key ingredient in meth have fun with it!

I mix Amplified N.O Loaded before games. Mix it in low calorie Gatorade bottle, drink it on my way to the rink. Always drink it before I lift weights as well. At 36 years of age the days of just showing up to the gym or showing up to the rink are long gone. I also work for FedEx so my legs and body are in a constant state of recovery. Monday is the only day of the week I have no activity, usually my cheat day. Last week I played hockey on Monday afternoon, Thursday night, Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon on top of 5 work days and I think I went to the gym twice. When you're younger you can tell guys you don't need this or this is bad for you but when you get older you will need to find out what works for you and what doesn't. I drink an 8oz sugar free Red Bull once a day, yesterday I had 2 cause I was getting sleepy before my afternoon game. Always take a daily vitamin, always watch what I eat 24 hours before I play hockey. Will not eat meals within 4 hours of game time. So for me the Amplified N.O Loaded is not only a supplement but it could be a little something in my stomach and the gatorade helps with hydration and a little bit of sugar to my system. And I drink Smart Water during games for the electrolytes. Does any of this help me? I feel like it does, it could just be the routine, maybe it makes my brain happy and my body knows when this stuff is being consumed I'm going to be playing hockey. And the most important part of supplementation for me is I don't feel wrecked the following day. Bottom line is you need to find out what works for you. Look at what other people are doing, give it a try if you want and find a program where you feel 100% everyday, not just when you're playing hockey. Another product I used to take that didn't contain stuff that most people will perceive as negative is Endurance Fuel by Twin Labs. I'd give that a shot if you don't want to take creatine.

The only supplement I felt ever made a difference for me in hockey was creatine. That was ball hockey, though, and I was already in very good shape when I was taking it, so it probably wasn't the creatine as much as I think it was.

Other than that, I have never had good reactions or results with any other supplements I've taken. I would whole-heartedly recommend that people stay away from 99% of the crap out there, because if any of it actually worked like it said it did, EVERYBODY would use it. If you "feel" it works for you, chances are that's all it is, a psychological rather than physical thing, and you're probably wasting your money.

The only supplement I'll take now is a multi-vitamin (or preferably a greens supplement) and protein (with dextrose after a hard workout).

For hockey, I find eating well before a game and staying hydrated (just water) makes all the difference. Some rice or pasta with chicken and a lot of water about an hour and a half before a game, and I'm good to go.

I occasionally grab a large coffee on my way to the rink. Maybe adding some ginseng soaked asian squirrel extract would give my game a bit more kick, but I don't want to pay for the marketing costs.

I bought some Accelerade this past week. I've never felt so good in my life while doing something so physical. At first I thought it was mental but then I used it at a pick up hockey game on Monday and I found myself standing up on the bench, leaning over the boards, and rocking back and forth on my skates. I NEVER do that and this was already like 45 minutes into the game with about 7 skaters on my side. Awesome stuff. I'll never drink Gatorade/Powerade ever again.

Our team Captain works for a supplement company, and she (yes, she) gave us all a dose of one of the supplements that was supposed to give you that extra boost... ended up with 3 goals and 1 assist for the game, but couldnt sleep till 2am... and thats after playing the 6pm game and taking only half the required dose. Never again... need.... sleep...

what is this accelerade stuff?

i'm looking at it right now, i've never heard of it. Is it another gatorade drink?

Yeah it's a powder sports drink mix. I don't know much about the specific science behind it but it has a 4:1 Carb:Protein ratio. So you get energy plus muscle support.

I also noticed that I didn't have any body aches after my game.

Note: I got the Lemonade flavor. While the flavor is ok the smell is a little funny. I figure it's something with the protein as most Protein shakes kind of have a weird smell.
