butt ends changing flex?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently playing with an x:40 87 flex and a wooden bauer butt end in it which adds about 3 inches.

I play centre and I'm 6"3, ~200 pounds. I find that the stick is perhaps a little too flexible for me and I'm wondering if the additional length from the butt end has in fact made the stick even more flexible than an 87 flex rating?

It seems logical to me that adding length decreases the flex rating. If this is the case, I'm wondering if I should perhaps purchase a 102 flex stick of the same type (x:40). I know that butt ends have a much higher flex rating than a stick so it's difficult to calculate exactly how much flex I'm gaining etc...

My question is if there's any formula to figure out how much flex will change by adding length? An 87 flex seems too weak for me, but I worry that a 102 flex may be too much. does adding a couple of inches with a butt end decrease a 102 flex to around ~95 or so?

EDIT: I understand that cutting a stick increases flex, and I've seen a couple of graphs regarding how flex rating changes when 2, 4, or 6 inches is removed etc. Is it safe to assume that flex rating increases at the same rate when length is added? It seems like there's an exponential increase rather than a linear one.

I don't know of any formulas that will figure out how much flex it will add to your stick but in short yes just like cutting a stick will make it stiffer than the stated. so adding any length to an uncut stick will make the stick whippier. I hope this helps

I believe your statement that the flex adding/decreasing is a linear formula and there are FAR too many factors that play into it. I don't even know if any of the companies are accurate with their scales on the back of the shafts either because I've cut a couple 77 flex Bauer shafts to the 92 mark and they're all still whippier than Easton 85s after. Just try to keep it general.

Another thing to keep in mind is that all wood extensions are not created equal. Some flex a lot more than others. You might have to try a few to get the feel you want.

Yeah, I managed to grab a bauer brand vapor wooden butt end specifically for that line. Fits like a charm on the old stick.

I don't think I'd ever go with a composite butt end. I can't imagine it feeling great.

I got a composite tps butt end in a one90 I bought off someone. I still haven't used it and I'm curious about the feel.

Common sense tells me a guy your size...should not go anywhere near a 87 flex.......just too much flex!! Maybe 100 flex would serve you better? And yes...thanks for asking...as I was wondering the same thing regarding the flex with butt exten.

Common sense shouldn't tell you anything about flex. It's just another in the world of personal preferences that encompass hockey.

You might want to explain to Ovechkin that he needs a stiffer stick.
