Non-hockey cloth tape that works like hockey tape?

Recommended Posts

Need to tape a stick and won't get a chance to go to the hockey shop before my next game. Alternatives from places like Home Depot or Wal-Mart or drug store?

Electrical tape for the handle. It will save your glove palms too. Old Russian trick. Athletic tape or climbing tape will work on the blade. Regullar petroleum jelly will work to waterproof the blade, same kind you use with kids or on a new tatoo to waterproof it. Just don't use too much.

I work in Athletic training. Athletic tape is not going to adhere as well to the blade. I have tried all types, the best I have seen is cheap practice tape that had the adhesive melted in the car. It works for a little while but it frays quickly. I guess if you re-tape your blade alot you will not notice. Adhesive on AT tape is designed to be used on bare skin...Plus AT tape is very expensive and if you do not buy from medical suppliers you will get small rolls.

I use clear sock tape over regular cloth tape for the handle.

Ended up buying some athletic tape. It says it works on hockey sticks. It'll tide me over until I can get some actual hockey tape.

There is definitely at least one type of athletic tape that works well on blades, the 1 1/2 that I use is great.

Well, if you live in Canada this is probably the best alternative. If you have a nearby costco, most of then sell Bulk hockey tape. 12 roles for 7.99. Personally, I think that this is a steal. Well provided you fit the requirements.

Along the same lines, what is the wide tape I see some players using?

Like Ovie right? Renfrew makes lots of tapes in different widths. I don't know many stores that sell the diff. vareieties, just standard.

Inch and a half width tape. The best for taping over-the-toe ala Ovechkin, Semin, Kovalchuk and the guy in yer avatar (and my personal favorite) James Neal
