Limited Selection (Pants)

Recommended Posts

I'm slowly getting back in Hockey, mainly because the new gym I go to has two NHL size rinks in it. One of the rinks has a slot frame for stick & puck everyday. Obviousyly I went out and bought new skates, helmet, visor, gloves, and stick. :) Any way, that was fine, mostly getting back into the swing of things and it was all going well. Until I realized that they only kept one rink going during the Summer. Stick and puck no longer had a time slot in the schedule.

It's been a few months since then, I've been slowly looking around for gear, but we only have a Sports Chek which doesn't carry a wide variety of gear and a Source for Sports which has a bigger selection along with higher end gear, but they don't have much of a selection at this time of year. I'm mostly looking for pants and shin pads at this time. I've tried on CCM's V10 and really liked them, but it's been so long since I wore a pair of hockey pants I'm not 100% sure of anything. I also tried on a pair of Nike/Bauer XXXX pants and they seemed good as well.

Stats:

6'2"- 210lbs - 34 Waist - Thick Legs

I want to be able to skate. Don't want restrictions. Preferably a lightweight pair of pants. I've been really working my legs hard at the gym solely to get back into hockey. Price isn't really an issue. I don't need the most expensive, but if they were likely my best choice, that's fine. And to be completely honest I'm a little vain, so they have to be somewhat stylish as well. ; )

And for shin-pads I've done even less research. I've tried on a few different pairs, but don't really have anything in mind. Again, something not bulky and lightweight. I don't plan on blocking many shots in the rec league. ; )

if price is no problem; I'd go with warrior hustlers in pants. With recent pants I've had One90s, and Easton s17s before those. These are awesome. They blew them away in terms of weight and comfort. There are quite a few people on here who have them and I'm sure they'd say the same. Sizing runs slightly larger, so if you are a 34 waist, a Small *might* work for you.

For shinguards, if you can find them, one95s will probably be your best bet in terms of comfort and not bulky. The S19s have full calf wrap and aren't bulky but they are either comfortable or not. Definately don't order over the net on these (or for any shins for that matter). The new x60s are pretty comfortable too.

Edit- if you don't want to shell out the money for the hustlers and want to stay with warrior, don't get the hitmans. Either go to bonafide or just go with another company/fit.

I can definitely vouch for the comfort and fit of the one95 shinnys. They are very light on my legs, and are quite protective. The only problem with mine is that after less than a whole season, both kneecaps have cracked, almost to the point where I had to throw them out. TBH, the only thing you can do for the pants and shinpads is to try on at least a similar model, and order online if your LHS doesn't have a great selection.

At your size, weight of pants shouldn't really be an issue. Also, the shops are all getting new stock these days.

I'm using the Easton S19 pants right now. Super comfortable, protective, and amazing mobility.

The One95's are okay, but I always found the spine protector to stay away from the body when bending forward.

I've heard a few good things about Warrior's Hustlers. My LHS has no Warrior pants, not sure if they're sold out, or just don't stock them. I'm sure if I made a trip to Edmonton (4hrs) Pro Hockey Life or another hockey shops would probably carry them. As for the CCM v10 have you heard much about them in regards to comfort and quality? And for shinguards my LHS carries the One95s and maybe even the S19, not 100% though. I liked the One95s, just didn't experiment with many other brands yet. And what is the reasoning for not ordering over the net for shinguards?

Awesome, maybe I'll have to pick up the One95s. Just have to decide on the size now. Yes, over the last month or so I've heard about the One95s having issues with the kneecaps. I'll just have to be sure I don't take any pucks or slashes to them :)

Okay, wasn't really sure about the weight issue. It's been awhile since I actually owned a pair of hockey pants. I'll check, but I don't think my shop carried the S19s in pants. They had a wide variety of Easton pants, just not sure of the S19s. Do most of the Easton pants fit similar, and does that go for most brands/companies

I just bought a pair of 09 rbk 5k pants about a month ago for 50 bucks. I'm 6'3'' and 250lbs with tree trunk legs and these are by far the best pants I've owned. Light, breathable and offer a lot of protection with a little extra length which is a plus in my book.

PHL or a normal sized shop should carry warrrior pants. with the V10s, they are discontinuing them, I think they are U+ Pro or something like that. The new CCM pants are actually a huge improvment over the V10s, but they are still weighty. Same with the new 11K and 9K from Reebok. For weight, the lightest pants are going to be high end bauers or hustlers. V10s are nice, there are just better things you can buy.

With not ordering shin guards over net, with the s19s, we've had people coming in here settled on them, and they end up taking home 10ks or warriors since we're sold out of bauer shins. We've also had people come in and want the new warriors, and take home the s19s. From my experience, consumers either love them or hate them.

The one95s or new x60s are both amazing shin guards. One95s to me seem slightly smaller profile than the vapors.

And as for the pants in the 3rd paragraph, s19s are nice. Easton has improved on every aspect of their product, however saying this, I still don't think they are nicer than the hustlers. I had the s17s and the ass protection on those was amazing, and it was heavily overboard. Very excessive. Can't vouch for new s19s though in that department. Most pants fit the same within the same company (model to model). Brands fit slightly different from one or the other.

I'm a big guy too.

I have the One90 - now One95 pants. Love them. I recommend them.

I also have the One95 Shins. Thinner profile which I like. I had RBK 9Ks, they were wider and more comfortable but they were too wide of me and thus I looked fatter than I even am!! You can't go wrong with the One95 line.

Warrior Hustler's are definitely worth the money! I bought mine 3 months ago and still holding up quite well besides a little button that holds your suspenders falling off..gotta patch that up. Anyways the protection you get from them are amazing, I've landed a couple times hard and felt no pain at all but one thing. Their massive in sizing! I'm a size 33-34 and I wear a medium and they do tend to fall a bit down sometimes, hope this helps!

Tackla pants are still the best I've seen, hands down. They hinged thigh pad beats the solid thigh pad on the warrior for break in and mobility. I prefer the 9000, they're a little lighter than the 5000 but still have a ton of protection. Since you're in Canada though, check out the Eagle pants. Vaughn used to make Tackla but bought Eagle and is producing pants under their name now. The pants aren't exactly the same as the Tacklas, but are very similar.

+1 on the Tackla 9000's

Awesome pants - great blend of protection and weight. The exterior is more like a canvas material and is very soft. If you look around, you can probably find a great deal on them too. I like the basic look too - not shiny with alot of panels like other pants.

Somebody mentioned the One95 pant - these are pretty nice too.

I second the V-10's. Extremely protective and very reasonably priced for a top end pant. You can't go wrong with these pants in my personal opinon. I've heard the Bauer pants aren't too bad but have heard the odd complaint that tailbone protection isn't what it should be. The CCM V-10 shin guards are also a very good product but are a slightly wider fitting shin pad. If you can live with that, then I'd invest in a pair. Almost every bit as good as high end Jofa/RBK.

Tackla 9000's for pants. Snug at the hips, kilt for legs. Can't go wrong if you want that breathability and mobility through the thighs.

How are they compared to the Vapor xxxx pants, any idea? I think I'm settled on the one95 shin pads. My local shop carries the shin pads so it's just a matter of picking them up. Pants I'll have to order online though. They don't have the V10 or the XXXX in my size right now. I noticed the Vapor xxxx are fairly hard to find online as well.

I'll look into it, but I don't recall my shop having Eagle pants. If I get a chance to go to Edmonton before I purchase a pair of pants I'll definitely give them a try.

I've got the CCM V10's and love them. They're VERY protective and not restricting at all. I'd definitely recommend them.

That's good to hear. I have a few different brands in mind but I'd have no problem buying the V10s. I'll have to make up my mind here soon. ; 0

My Source For Sports just started getting some of their new hockey gear in. I was there today and they had a shipment from Bauer. They had the x-60 pants and some lower end models from Bauer. Hopefully over the next week or so I'll get to try a few new pair of hockey pants on. I was hoping for the One95 Pants, but no luck.
