NHL Wrist Shot Speed

Recommended Posts

Sort of related; why isn't there a "hardest wrist shot" segment at the all star skills competition. I've got to imagine that it would be pretty entertaining even to the casual fan; involves speed, easily measured in MPH, even if the casual fan doesn't appreciate the art of the wrist shot he or she would certainly respond to "whoah,, look at how HARD he can shoot."

Probably because when you think "hardest shot" you think slapshot. Plus, there's already the accuracy competition for wrist shots :)

I thought they measured them in goals.

If that were true, then Gretz's wrister must've been around a billion MPH. But we all know that's not true.

Anyhow, I know there's the accuracy comp. but I just it'd be cool if they had a separate event for hardest wrist shot.

Or just leave the speed gun up during accuracy shooting .

Most of the time, accuracy goes up when velocity goes down (to a point). If you're trying to shoot as hard as you can, wrister or slapper, you aren't as likely to hit your target.

Gretzky's wrister was more like a $1,000's per goal!

NHL goalie coaches have consistently said that unobstructed wrist/snapshots (since composite sticks became commonplace) are almost always in the 85mph range. That of course can go up based on the current speed of the player shooting. The main things that separate a major goal-scorer from the pack are the ability to shoot in that range with accuracy in sub-optimal situations, disguising the release, and changing the position of the puck to open the angle and disrupt the goalie's stance.

+1. With composite sticks, quick release followed by accuracy is what is most important. Better to focus on that than a few extra mph on your shot.

A really quick release and some accuracy is really crucial. Of course, you need to have decent velocity, but it's not all about speed if you can't put it where you want it.

If you can't put it where you want it, speed/velocity is really your only other hope.

Without accuracy, speed isn't going to help. Accuracy is the result of practice, if you want to be more accurate, then practice.

practice is gonna help with everything, i shoot around 300-350 shots a day plus 30 minutes of stickhandling, im only 15 but have a 62 mph snap and a 74 slap, its all about the legs and the core, my coach who used to play pro is 51 years old and shot a 73 wrist and a 93 slap sothat shout give you an idea of what a retired player can do ovechkin's snap shot is close to 90 miles an hour btw

Instead of creating a new thread, I'll just up this one.

A problem I'm having recently is flexing and whipping the stick with wrist shots. I've been out of hockey for ~4 years and now getting back into it the best I can going to drop ins 3 times a week until a league opens up. I know it's like riding a bicycle, but, it feels like I can't whip my stick at all. I've got a NB XXX at 87 reg flex and I'm ~190lbs so I have the strength to do it. But, for the life of me, trying to do it like I used to when I was actually playing I can't. I think the more I try, the more bad habits I'm picking up. So, instead of using the flex, I'm just using my wrist/upper body and leaning forward the best I can to get the velocity I need.

So, anyone have any tips to get back to whipping the sauce?

Maybe try little more force on the lower hand to flex the stick more and as you sweep through make sure you pull back with your top hand.

shooting with just ur upper body wont generate nearly as much power as you could if you used your legs and your core. load up on one leg and transfer your weight explosively wile torking through and lean in itll flex the stick and generate alott of power cus ur legs and core are much stronger than your upper body with practice youll get quicker with it

I don't remember the FoxTrak puck giving a shot's velocity but I do remember the glow turning red when it was shot or passed hard.

skip to 5 min... it gives you the answer

The first several wrist shots I saw showed red (70+).

Red tail shows motion, 70+ shows up as a speed.
