Ahriman

Well my skates fit a week ago...

Recommended Posts

So 13 months ago I picked up a pair of One95s. They fit me perfectly; for the first time in basically my life I had skates that didnt hurt at all length or width. About a month ago I started to notice a little heel slippage in my right skate all of a sudden. I was getting rubbed raw and left with very painful blisteres/new skin. I figured I just was in a rush and didn't lace up my skates as tightly as I should have. I really crank down my skates the next skate to the point of pain across the top of my foot, still get some heel slippage, raw skin stays raw. I take care of these skates; soles out and hang upside down after every ice time, material inside the boot is just barely starting to look worn, no pilling or excessively worn areas.

I took them back to the local shop, explain that I'm getting a little slippage all of a sudden with no explanation, worker and I decide to rebake them and toss them in a FIT machine (wearing the socks I always use for skating). Two days later at my next ice time I feel like I'm in brand new skates again, the boot is stiff and solid the way they felt when I first got them in June of 09, for the first 20 minutes or so I think the problem is fixed. Later on I start to feel the now familiar slippage but now in BOTH skates, not just my right. It's painful, it affects my stride and its uncomfortable walking around for days afterwards in shoes/sandals/bare foot.

I'm running out of reasons this is happening and solutions I can try. Next on the list is wearing thicker socks though that hardly seems like a true solution. Can anyone think of what might have happened or what else I could do short of buying new skates so soon?

Maybe your feet are shrinking. Lose any weight lately? Try a thicker sock.

That's what I thought at first too, weight loss can cause serious foot size changes. But if that were the case, the re-bake wouldn't have stopped being better part way through a skate. Sounds to me like maybe the padding inside the boot is breaking down. Can you feel any soft or 'dead' spots on the padding inside?

I would expect skates to get a tiny bit bigger after wearing them, even though you baked them.. Maybe it's enough to make your heel slip?!

Socks will be tried; and 10-15 pounds at most. I cant imagine that would have been enough to make my feet smaller though but... I guess if its the matter of having $700 skates that fit or not I guess I'll go eat a cake.

If you dropped 10 to 15, that is the answer right there.

Also, try waxed laces if you're not using them already. If you are already using them, maybe it's time for a new set? I normally swap laces every few months.

So, thicker socks, eat a whole cake, and rotate the laces. Anything else? (I've tried superfeet in them, preferred the standard insoles).

I agree with rachel. It sounds like the padding in that part of the skate is starting to wear out. In my experience (I work in the medical/fitness industry) you would have to lose more than 10-15 pounds for your feet to be affected to the point your skates became too big. I would not try to put on a bunch of weight. It will all go to your gut and your skates still won't fit correctly.

Maybe try to re-form the skates barefoot or with ultra thin socks, to account for the padding / lining packing down?

yeah it was really a comment made in jest.

So far taping bandage pads to my heels have 'solved' my problem

Wasn't quite sure where to put this, but after a 'heel slip' search, thought it would fit in here (no pun intended).

I've been experiencing the exact same problem as Ahriman...love my XP120's, fit like a glove and the whole nine. Huge XP120 fan. The pair I'm in now, I've been using for about 6-8 months or so...but lately I've noticed my heel slipping quite a bit. At first it seemed like nothing, but I've been obsessing about it lately, and it's throwing me off.

My question is - has anyone ever attributed heel slip to the socks they were wearing? I used to wear just the thin, white oxy socks, but lately switched over to the Under Armour compression socks. I'm wondering if the nylon in those socks is contributing to heel slip, or would that not matter? I also wondered to myself if I didn't kick my heel far enough back when I had them baked. I have a WIDE forefoot - so I'm forced to go with EE skates - but a moderate to narrow heel, so sometimes the fit is a little wonky in the back anyway.

Thoughts on the socks?

I do not have experience with issues and skates but I have had similar problems with soccer cleats. A bunch of my hockey playing friends play indoor soccer to help keep us in shape and during games when wearing my "soccer socks" I get no slipping. But when we are out playing on the high school football field I will wear normal Hanes ankle socks and my cleats will slip like crazy.

Not sure what to think about the socks, but try a pair of 2mm EZeeFit Ankle Booties, works for me :)
