Try out tonight.

Recommended Posts

I have try outs tonight for a junior team. They have already had try outs but the coach agreed to let me skate in a team scrimmage to give me a chance to get a spot. I assume since I'm coming to the team late I will be fighting for someones spot so I won't be greeted with open arms.

Does anybody have any advice for me? I'm kinda nervous.

I'm gonna give you the same old cliche thing but, leave it all on the ice! You don't wanna regret anything! Cause truth be told I'll be 21 this March and I wish I took the time and dedication to try out for a Junior team. :/

Good luck mayne!

Stay loose, physically and mentally. Work as hard as you can, but try not to stress over any mistakes you make. Don't be timid.

Good luck!

Just play "your game" to the best of your ability. Don't try to be a player you're not. Either the coach likes what he sees or he doesn't.

If the team is already 'set' and you're coming in late you might consider a couple things:

1. The coach already has his set #1 line and D pairing ( which isn't you...yet)- maybe he's looking for depth (and isn't happy with what he has so far) on the checking line

2. The coach is looking for someone who's COACHABLE, not some me centered guy or head case-so BE COACHABLE (be a sponge!)

hell, a well placed 'coach what do you want me to do in such and such situation' could get you on the team.

3. Be positive and cheer on your future team mates, 'nice shot, nice pass, nice block' just loud enough for the people that matter to hear it (but not patronizing, that's lame)

4. You wouldn't have been invited if they didn't think you were good enough. If you think you're good, you are.

I'm a coach and that's my take

Here's some things that I look for in Junior players, it might help you...

- First to the puck always: even if it means you get drawn into a 50/50 battle when you get possession, get there first.

- Keep moving your feet: This is so hard to explain over the net, but essentially its about moving your feet to... get into position for coverage, to make a pass, to receive a pass, to backcheck etc.

- Chirp allot of positivity: Thats right chirp, but positive.. "Lets go boys!, Great shot Johnny!, Save goalie!, Go hard lads!" All great examples.

- Get up fast: If you get knocked on your arse or into the boards then down, don't sit there and think about the embarressment. You are a hockey player, bounce up and backcheck that play no matter what!

- Backcheck like thats all you do on the ice: No matter what, you need to stay with the play, so if you get left behind or beaten, make sure you come back and get on your off the puck assignment as quickly as possible.

Haha that`s what my parents told me when I was trying out for rep this year. I`m just like -Okay mom, thanks for the support-. But congratulations dude, I was just gonna tell you to max the effort factor and show more like want, than the other players. Good luck with your new team man!!

Don't do the Haka, they won't get it. ;)

Congrats! I play with a few good level Kiwi's here in Melb Senior hockey. Good lads, hope you represent NZ well too!

It's probably the hardest thing to explain to people! Drop some names of the guys you play with? I played in the NZIHL for 3 years so I'm bound to know a few guys?

(Mods, sorry if this is too off topic?)

Mikey Ting is a close mate. Some NZ guys I have played with/against recently are Robert Clark, Jaden Skipper, James Mcdonald. Just to name a few.
