iPad apps

Recommended Posts

So, I was just given an iPad as a gift and I've never used an iPhone or iPod touch and I have no idea what apps in the ap store are useful and what are a complete waste of time. What type of aps do you guys use out there and what should I be looking at. Thanks

Stuff I Use

Multimedia:

  • Netflix: Self explanatory, need a netflix subscription
  • AirVideo: Streams any video file from a mac/pc over LAN/WIFI/internet. Freaking amazing app
  • CineXPlayer: Plays divx/xvid formatted video with .avi conatiners

E-reader:

  • GoodReader: Great PDF reader, easy to transfer files over wifi and usb. I use it the most to read books and magazines
  • Bookman: Ok, comicbook reader. Not very good, but its the best out there. Opens comic books in .cbz container

News:

  • Flipboard: Scrapes various internet news sites plus your twitter/facebook friends for news stories and presents it in a digital magazine format.
  • USA TODAY: Digital Version of the USA today news paper
  • Editors' Choice: Top news stories from the New York Times

Games:

  • Angry Birds: You shoot birds at buildings to knoxk them down. Sounds dumb but hours of fun.
  • Flight Control: Manage flight paths of various air crafts
  • Plants vs Zombies: A twist on the tower denfense genre. Lot's of fun even if you have no idea what tower defense is.
  • Osmos HD: not sure how to describe it, but it's kind of like the early levels of spore.

Misc.:

  • VLCRemote M: Remote for VLC. I used it as the remote for my home theater pc. Can browse files on PC/MAC and create playlist on the fly.
  • Stumble Upon: Great way to kill time browsing random websites.

ESPN Scorecenter is great, you can pick your favorite teams in all leagues and get notifications at set times and whenever someone scores. i use this for football, hockey, and baseball mostly and it works great

Depending on what you want to use it for too, here are some apps I use:

Task Management

  • Taska - follows GTD methods and syncs with Toodledo
  • Box.net - tranfer files from your computer to the cloud and retrieve anywhere with iPad or iPhone
  • Keynote - create Powerpoint presentations
  • Numbers - opens and edits spreadsheets like Excel
  • Pages - opens and edits MS Word documents

Alternatively for the last three, you can get DocsToGo which does the same.

Utilities

  • Air Mouse - use the ipad as a giant remote/mouse on your desktop or notebook
  • Penultimate - write or draw on the iPad. Great for getting quick scribbles.

Reading:

  • Amazon Kindle - free app that lets you access your ebooks from your Kindle account. I recommend buying books through Amazon instead of the iBooks store as many other devices can read Kindle books using the Kindle app whereas only Apple products can read iBook materials.
  • GoodReader - already mentioned above. Great PDF reader.

If you are like me, annoyed that the iPad lacked support for Flash and do not mind jailbreaking the device, there are instructions on the web on how to get Flash on your iPad. The process is pretty simple and takes less than an hour.

I'm definitely annoyed that it can't support flash, but I'm not really a computer guy. I don't know what jailbreaking is or how to do it. What does it do to the device?

For jailbreaking I'd check out everythingiCafe.

I jailbroke my 3GS and I wouldn't go back but I'm not sure if I'd jailbreak an iPad. With how much you use a mobile phone finding faults that can drive you nuts is much easier and jailbreaking corrected a lot of those faults.

its obviously slower. by how much? i cant really tell to be honest, unless i go from 3g to wfi or vice versa quickly. i can tell you that the ipad would be nearly useless to me if it didnt have 3G.

Surprised no one mentioned the TSN app. It replaces all the other sports apps. It has live up to date scores, headlines, stories, box scores everything. Here are some others:

The Hockey News

Yellow Pages

eBay

World Map

Hockey Canada

Google

Timmyme (finds tim hortons around you)

Games:

Falldown

Tetris

Pacman

Harbour Master

Solitaire

These are basically the ones I use daily
