The 2010-2011 Suspension Thread

The entire game would've been better if Crosby and Cooke were in it — would've loved to see one of them get knocked out instead.

I get Cooke, but Crosby? Crosby may be a huge whiner, but he is NOTHING like Cooke.

Just finished watching the game (recorded it). I thought it was entertaining, and that's all I'm gonna say.

He's just trying to throw gas on the Pen fans fire. Hopefully they will be smart enough to avoid the bait.

Yes, that's why I said the stupid stuff didn't start until after the score was 6-0. Everything you mention came after that point.

I respectfully disagree . they went after talbot on his first shift , but nothing happened. just so happens the isles scored heavy, early. so yea, it was 6-0. but the isles had control of that game eary. so did they say , hey lets get a big lead , then go after them. probably not. But they also didnt expect a big lead 1/2 way tru the 1st either.

Despite me having a ton of respect for Crosby's skill — and acknowledging that he is the best player in the world right now, I still would love to see him get knocked out.

Cooke is just a piece of garbage. I throw him in with the likes of Sean Avery. Both players with potential to actually be good but ruin it with doing stupid shit.

Look, I know you guys know I'm a pens fan and all that crap. I'm not gonna get into the nitpicking of 'if the shoe was on the other foot, he said she said blah blah blah'; the bottom line in my opinion is that the game was a disgrace. The worst part of it was that it appears to be a decision from the top down on behalf of the Isles to target certain Pens players. Its too Bertuzzi-esq and the league should handle as such.

It's Max Talbot, who cares?

Where's the disciplinary action for the referees and linemen for failure to control the game?

Nothing they can do to stop players from being douchebags. The only thing they can do is hand out penalties and/or toss guys out of the game, and they did that. Any discipline for them wouldn't be made public in any case, the league never hangs officials out to dry. That said, someone in the league office feels they ejected too many people, according to one source.

If Talbot mans up, and certain Pens don't throw some borderline hits once the game is out of reach, I highly doubt it would have exploded like it did. Before the stuff in the third period you could just see it build each time before it blew up.

Much like football, there's almost always a chance to call a penalty- the refs just choose not to. This was a situation that was brewing the whole game, and could have possibly been prevented if some heavy handed officiating had been present.

Even if that may have been the right thing to do, it would have resulted in a negative reaction for those guys from the league. Like I said, the thing they're catching the most flack for is for essentially doing what you suggest.

Gillies should be done for the season. It's absolutely unacceptable to hurt someone and continue to punch them while they're on the ice. Then this loser stands in the doorway after being kicked off the ice to yell at the player injured player he attacked. What a piece of ****.

What a joke, Martin gets less for the Bertuzzi style attack than Gillies got for the cheap shot.

I cannot believe Martin only got four games. Add a 1 in front of the four, at least. I agree with Gillies getting nine, I just really thought Martin would have been up there as well...

"Obviously, you never expect to get grabbed by the guy and get punched like that," Talbot said. "I don't think I'm a guy that would stand down if someone comes to my face and asks me."

That makes it sound like Max feels like he was never properly challenged before Martin went after him..

At any rate, once again the league screws up. Gilles forfeits not even 25k in salary. Yikes.

What's funny about this is — Cooke gets 4 games for a hit to the head, something the league has been "trying" to crack down on yet Gillies gets 9 games. Cooke, a repeat offender and an all around piece of garbage should've gotten 10 games. Campbell is so inconsistent in the games he gives out for suspensions...

lol You have a Matt Cooke avatar.

The Bertuzzi comparison is a little overblown. Martin didn't stalk him though 2 zones disregarding all concern for the puck and the play. Martin was skating back up the ice and he see's Talbot in front of him getting on the backcheck.

Haley searched out Talbot during the debacle in the third period too. Not to mention Haley seeking out Johnson after that. Soon as he got off Talbot he was looking down towards Johnson. Just an FYI, the runway to the Isles locker room was down the runway where they sent Gilles..at the opposite end of the ice from Johnson. He had no business going down that way. Regardless of the time, score, etc. if you don't think the Isles planned on Talbot/Johnson/retribution before it was all said and done then I cant help you.

Yes I don't doubt they wanted a little of Talbot and Johnson. And as for Haley, he was headed towards the box. You don't want Johnson getting into a fight? Then tell him not to challenge Haley next time. Yes, that was on Johnson. Shaking his glove and coming out to the blueline while Haley is going to the box.Johnson is lucky Godard came off the bench because he was about to get rocked.

Come now, Cooke is much worse than Avery. Cooke is the one player in the league I wish injury upon. The guy is a little chicken shit and hope he gets pounded the next time these two teams play.

Edit: The NHL got the Gillies and Martin suspensions wrong. Should have been the other way around.

I assume that you're referring to the Cooke hit on Tyutin, the one where no one was hit in the head. The penalty was for charging although it should have been boarding and the head wasn't targeted. What Gillies did and what Cooke did were completely different. Gillies aimed for Tangradi's head, continued to punch him after he was down, and taunted him from the runway. Cooke got suspended for that length of time because he's Matt Cooke, not specifically for the hit. Other players wouldn't and for the most part, haven't, faced such a lengthy suspension for that kind of hit that didn't result in some type of injury. Ponikarovsky, while with the Pens late last year, put a much more dangerous hit from behind on Josh Bailey and only got 2 games.

The fact is, Cooke is a dirty scumbag. His knee to knee on Ovie a few nights before warranted a suspension. This type of dirty play from Cooke wont stop until someone puts him in the hospital.

wow.... just watched the video from the game.

gillies should be banned from the league.. he intentionally threw a headshot, then punched the guy when he was clearly hurt, then taunted him after he was thrown out... no place in any sport (or anywhere) for that kind of behavior.

Same for martin and cooke.

It may not have been exactly like the Bertuzzi situation, but it was close enough for comparison. Grabbing the guy from behind and taking a swing at him should result in a very lengthy suspension, even if you don't end his career.

lol You have a Matt Cooke avatar.

And you have an Islanders avatar. Agree to disagree I suppose. I'm not going to engage in another pissing match with you.

“Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be. But what happened Friday night on Long Island wasn’t hockey. It was a travesty. It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that.

“The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed.

“We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action.

“If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to re-think whether I want to be a part of it.”

What has Mario had to say about Cooke's antics over the last couple years? Unless you call out your own players when they're guilty, it's called being a hypocrite.

Lol......that entire statement is a joke. Can't agree with what Chadd said any more. "Hypocrisy at it's finest" was the first thing out of my mouth when I read that.

An update from the Islanders/Sabres game: Hamonic got a 10 min. misconduct for an incident with Kaleta at the end of the period. Looked to be a bit of a spear.

EDIT: Harry Neale says it was for complaining about Kaleta's hit on him.
