Blade stuck in shaft, how do I get it out?

Recommended Posts

I apologize if this is covered somewhere but I couldn't find anything.

I have a Reebok 8K shaft with a Bauer X:60 Wood blade in it. When I first put the blade in it was a VERY tight fit and I ended up having to whack it in millimeter by millimeter, thinking that was the norm for a tight fit. Obviously I should have shaved the tendon down a little bit, live and learn.

Anyway, I wanna try another blade but now I can't get the damn thing out. I heated the connection up with a heatgun for a while several times and it's not getting any looser at all, I can pull it out MAYBE 1 millimeter. It's a snug fit. Does anyone have any smart ideas of how to get the blade out without damaging the shaft? I don't mind destroying the blade if need be.

Thanks - Kevin

I'd heat up the blade as much as you can and then take off what ever end cap you may have on the butt end, then stick some kind of rod down through the shaft and hammer the rod down onto the blade which should hopefully help move it some more and make it easier to remove.

Heat up the inserted blade area pretty good with the heat gun and get two people to tug on the blade and on the shaft. It works everytime and it's fun to see who doesn't expect it to come out and goes falling down.

You could chop off the tenon flush with the end of the shaft, drill some holes through the tenon that is inside the shaft, and chisel out the tenon piece by piece.

Haha. That made me laugh pretty good. I'll try this with my brother. Thanks for the replies all, one of these has to work. :P

Yeah, Bauer blades don't play nicely with other company's shafts, their tenons are thick.

Heat it up a lot and use a lot of muscle.

Agreed. I've had a XXXX blade stuck about 3/4" out of a Dolo shaft for over a year. Tried the two man method, the rod and bang, and the vice, all with the stick at molten temperatures.

Good to know for future reference. I tried the heat and muscle bit but that didn't work, shoulders don't like to pull that way anymore after tearing each of my rotator cuffs.

You may just be SOL. Square blade/end plugs just don't work well with rounded corner shafts. I spent nearly 30 minutes trying to remove one the other day, heating it over and over and using a piece of rebar from opposite end. It wouldn't budge. Ended up cutting it off. Give it a try though. And yes, next time use an exacto to whittle down the square corners.

for one person, this always works, only if you don't care about blade though.

get a 6" piece of wood, we use a broken blade cut before it starts to bend.

drill a screw in the middle of it (this extra piece of wood).

now drill this piece of wood through your blade, like 2" above shaft.

heat up.

stand on the piece of wood for leverage.

pull.

blade comes out realllllly easy.

reason this works is because your muscles & gravity + friction work a hell of a lot easier together when going vertically. blades that we use two people to pull sometimes wont come out due to mainly frictioin.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't have a rod long enough to try and push the blade out, sadly. When my bro gets home I'll try pulling, otherwise I'll try raganblink's suggestion.

For future reference, are composite blades the same fit? Would X60 Comp blades give me fit problems too? Easton SE16? I'd hate to have to shave down the tendons and mess with the durability of the tendon.

Edit:

Success! I tried pulling with my bro, didn't budge. I tried drilling a hole in the heel, putting a steel bar thru that and pushing on the bar with my feet while pulling on the shaft... bent the bar like it was tin foil. Finally I just sawed off the blade and screwed it into the heel, then used my feet to push on that and it came off first try with a satisfying pop. Haha.

those x60s and se16s are tapered, the only other tapered blades are reebok 11ks/8ks & dolomites.

they'll only work in x60, se16, dolomite, 11k shafts (for the main companies), the rest are standard and wont work in those shafts (TotalONE, s19, ST, AK27, etc)

Well I'm using a 8K shaft which is tapered. I'm just curious if the X60 composite would still have the fat tendon that doesn't work with the 8K very well.

Thanks for the wood in the heel suggestion btw. :P

Another way is jamming the blade in the hinge portion of a door and shutting the door so it acts as a sort of clamp. Get someone or something to hold the door tight on the stick and pull away.
