Breaking in one100 skates

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I was hoping to get some advice and anyone's expertise on a new pair of skates I bought. I purchased this weekend a pair of the one100 after skating in the Easton Synergy 1500c for 3 years. I tried on the S17s, RBKs, CCMs, Grafs, the Vapors and Supremes to see what fit my foot the best. I really loved the feel of the Supremes immediately and having Tuuks put on my old Easton skates seemed like an easy transition. I have EXTREMELY small and thin feet for an adult, and I have puzzled every shop around me with the size. I measure at a 5 on the Bauer foot scale, but when I try on that size, my toes don't come anywhere close to the toe cap. I tried every half size down (5, 4.5, 4, ect;) until I ended up down at a 2.5! I couldn't believe it. In the 3, my toes were hardly touching the toe cap, if at all from what I remember. The 2.5, my feet were definitely touching the toe cap and hurt a bit, but when I would bend my knees they'd sink back just enough without pain. The manager advised that is perfect, right where I want them, and some of my local shop guys advised even after baking, the heel is still going to sink back a bit from wear. Knowing I would be getting them baked as well, I went with the 2.5 instead of the 3 which would maybe potentially end up too big.

The Bauer rep happened to be at the store that day and after the baking was done, was nice enough to lace them up for me! He did my left foot first, then my right. After waiting 15 minutes, I took them off and the rep laced the skates up for me (he said will help them to mold the best this way) and advised to leave them overnight. I left them for 24 hours and then tried them out in the public skate. The skates felt amazing skating, VERY responsive, everything felt crisp/strong, and I am incredibly happy with the skates and going with the tighter fit (my Eastons I had a cm to 2cm of space and my foot would move side to side because of too much width with my laces tied as tight as they could go).

However, my ONLY complaint is that my right foot's big toe is jammed against the toe cap. It isn't noticeable much when I skate, but hurts like anything when I'm not moving. Oddly enough, my left foot (big toe feathers against the cap when standing) is about a cm bigger than my right foot, yet, somehow my RIGHT foot is the one that is crammed?! My right foot rubs against the cap (to where it gets "stuck" almost), where my left only 'feathers'. I did put Superfeet in the skates, and while both the same length, my left insole can move up and down a little bit, while my right won't budge. I skated with the stock insoles as well to see if this made any difference, none. At home, I removed the insoles completely to see if maybe it was the insoles that could be throwing something off, but still the same results with my smaller right foot crammed, and larger left foot not.

Any advice on what I can do? Would a rebaking of the right skate maybe help since we did the left foot first? I don't know with the one100 and the ALIVE material, if that would have any difference in maybe making the boot "stretch" a bit. From what I can see, the insides look like they baked pretty evenly.

Thank you for your help! Sorry post is so long! Tried not to leave anything out -- TY, Kristen

You could try to re bake them once more, but ive heard stories of skates losing their integrity due to being baked too much, so you should definitely keep that in the back of your mind. Also, i believe there are services that can make your skate up to a size larger. I dont remember where i saw it, but im sure it would come up somewhere on google.

Your toes should come away from the front of the toe box in time as your heel begins to settle deeper back into the boot from wearing the skates over and over again. Wearing your skates once is not a fair indication of how they will feel forever.

I had a similar problem before with my left big toe being crammed a bit. I did do a rebake after about 4-5 skates and made sure to kick my heel back well. Also, when I put them on each time to skate I made sure to really kick my heel back and use my laces to pull the ankle back. After about 10 skates they were perfect. Exact fit and no more toe pain. If you are sure you got the right size I'd give it more time to break in.

Darkstar is correct. I had the same issue with my right big toe. I was worried and consulted with JR about it. He said the same thing. Trust these guys, your heel will settle back and your toe will be perfect.

BTW; I actually baked my skates with my SuperFeet in them to make sure EVERYTHING fit perfect.

You guys rock, thank you so much for all the advice and feedback! I'm a long time reader of the forum so trust your guys experience more than anyone I know. It's definitely mind easing to hear some of you experienced very similar issues! I should be able to get 4-5 more skates in by weekends' end so I'm hoping to reply with the good news. I know the skate CAN fit my feet since my bigger foot is doing just fine lol I was just worried with the ALIVE outer material on the skates if it was something that maybe wouldn't stretch without another bake, but it sounds that isn't an issue. Thankfully this will be my only "break in" pain, which seems simple enough. Otherwise, the skates are perfect. Love them. Thank you all again! :)

Lucky! I wish I thought to bring my SF with me. I love the SuperFeet. I have flat feet so why it doesn't create an arch for me, it definitely helps support big time. I skated one skate with the SuperFeet and one with the stock insole (to compare) and I could absolutely feel the difference.

how old are you? just curious because size 2.5 is ridiculously small for an adult

I am 22. I never thought my feet were that tiny until I tried on these skates!! I am a size 4.5 in kids sneakers. I bought the skates from the Hockey Monkey store in NJ and the manager commented to me he also sold a pair that size to an 8 year old that day. He brought over some of the other staff assigned to the skate section just to see how little my feet were. Kind of awkward, but they commented better to be the girl with small feet than known for the girl with HUGE feet haha

small feet means you pay less for skates too! I'm half a size too big for most junior skates qq

A lot of the smaller female players in my area are around that size (2-4). But there is also a bigger asian population here.

But there was once i fitted a 10 year old girl with a size 7 skate. Her feet measured up as a mens US9. At TEN years old...

Thanks for asking this question. I'd tried on about 7 different kinds of skates at a huge used sporting goods store. I was certain that a size 3 S17 would fit, and was able to buy a pair that looked brand new (probably bought on the internet and didn't fit). The well-worn 3s seemed longer than the new 3, so I was a bit nervous, but the price was right.

As for your skates, I was a 2.5 Bauer and a 4.5 kids shoe. I wear a 5 kids now, so the 3 one100 fits. I love paying half price for skates and at over 30yo, it makes the guys at the LHS laugh.

Apropos of nothing, I'm having a horrific time getting a comfortable pair of skates, and was down to S17s or one100 but really wanted a wide. I couldn't determine if the wide size meant wider toe box, though.

I would think that the wider model of skate would require a wider toe box. It would only make sense but........... I'm sure someone FAR MORE EXPERIENCED could answer this.

Oh no! I can imagine half of a size is tough to be right at that cut off! Especially with knowing how much the price jumps for just that little bit more of a boot! One of my team mates is right at the half size too big as well and wishes she could cram her foot into the juniors!!

Wow!!!

In the hockey world I'm learning it pays to have tiny feet! How long have you skated in your new S17s? Did they stretch out much with wear? I pretty much was decided down to the S17s and Bauers (one100 over x60) as well. I went with the one100 because I felt the boots overall were narrower, which is what I needed. I thought the S17s were perfect in the heel (heel lock was great on them, very narrow too), but the forefoot/toe area was too wide for me. I could definitely feel the boot open in space from back to front. I had too much space in them I felt along the forefoot's sides because of this. The one100 is pretty consistant in the width I think from heel to toe, to me! I tried all skates in the Regular width for Easton and the D width for Bauer. My opinion is if you wanted a wider toe, the S17 seemed bigger to me and I'd think better for you. But every foot is different-- you could feel it totally different than me!

If you are having trouble with a certain width on the skate, someone on here I'm sure could suggest whether it'd be worth it to get the boot stretched a bit if everything else fits okay. I don't know too much about stretching to really say.

this was discussed quite a few times before here so appologies for repeating, but Supremes are made of a wide last, so retail 'D' for One100 is really an 'E'. This is why retail supremes fit wider then Vapors.

Customs are different (thanks a LOT to JR for clarifying it btw!) since they're true to last meaning a 'D' is a 'D'. having received customs T1 just recently I can attest to this - custom D is much narrower then retail D.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to follow up and post a quick update incase anyone reads this at some point with a similar issue. I was able to skate with my skates for a total of 5-6 hours now. I took them to my local shop and talked to the manager of the store that I deal with regularly at the Flyers Skatezone. He did something I never heard recommended before but it did help a bit I believe!

He had a little red bottle laying around of what I believe was shoe leather softener. He took the footbeds out of my skates and applyed a fairly liberal amount into the back of the heel and let it drizzle around the padding in the back of the skate as well. Then he let it run down toward the toe. He told me to put the skates on, lacing them up, and get to walking around in them, quickly. He did this with both of my skates and I walked around the store for about 8 minutes, and then sat in a chair while keep kicking my heels back to really dig into the back of the heel. The skates with my toes pointing upward and sitting felt perfect. I also did feel my heel sliding back a bit. He told me the rest was just breaking them in, like everyone said on here. The leather softener is going to have much less of an effect on a stiff and expensive skate like the one100, but it'll do some work, even though the hydrophobic liner is kind of contradicting to what he was trying to get achieved. It was a nice little trick though I never heard of!

I also took out my SuperFeet (I cut them a little short like the instructions recommended so the insole could "slide" with my foot) and placed my old SuperFeet from my old Eastons in. The insole was longer coming from a longer boot. That actually made a big difference since the footbed was pressing directly against the toe of the skate, it allowed the heel to really sit back just that little bit more further. I slammed my heel back into the skate, with a little help from the bench, and tied my ankle in tight. I had exactly the room I wanted and no toe pain the whole game! Was very nice! Skating like that will hopefully break the skate in the rest of the way so I won't have to take up a leg's length in the locker room forever.

Is this true with junior size skates as well? I had the Vapor x60 2.5 on my left foot and the Supreme one100 on my right foot, and honestly both felt about the same. The differences were practically miniscule and it was mostly because of the thickness of the tongues. I went with the one100 over the x60 because I play defense and it offered a bit more what I was looking for in that department. Very interesting though!
