One95 Tongue Problem

Recommended Posts

I bought a pair of One95s this past summer to replace my ageing Graf 705s. I am probably still in the break-in period as I have only skated with them about 20 times but have been having an issue with the tongue on the skates that keeps me rotating back to the Grafs. The edge of the tongue digs into my ankle bones on both feet still resulting in blisters an raw spots. It's even worse if I tuck the tongue under my shins so I have to go tongue out. This isn't too bad as I get a bit better forward flex like I had in the Grafs. I figured that the felt in the tongue would break down over time to alleviate the ankle bone chaffing but am starting to get impatient and are considering trimming some larger notches in the tongues. Has anyone else cut into these tongues? There seems to be something sandwiched inside the felt. I have never been one to do mods to my equipment figuring they would break in over time. I think this isn't quite as true for the new materials (i.e. plastics) that are being used.

Sorry if this has come up before when these skates came out, but I did a couple searches and didn't find anything.

Well, I tried cutting the tongue around my ankle with limited success. It was pretty easy to see where to notch it out as the foam was starting to tear. The only problem was that there was only about a half inch on each side that I could cut before getting to where it is sewn together. It was a little better as I beveled the edge and it wasn't as sharp as the original seemed like it was heat treated to bond the felt and foam. I will have to give it a few more skates but there is hope that I won't have to buy new tongues.

I just had a layer of felt stitched to the inside of my One95 tongues and it feels awesome. If you have someone in your area that can do that, I highly recommend it. I had mine done at Jake's Custom Pro Shop in El Segundo. It does fill up some volume inside (which I needed too...big feet skinny ankles) so if your skates are very tight already it may be too much.

Great idea - add some thickness to the tongue through the ankle. I am going to get some mole foam in the area to see if it helps. I am coming from a very low volume skate (705) so this should be ok. I do have superfeet insoles in these skates which tend to take up some volume in the foot area but my ankles are thin and bony. I am too cheap to fork out money for bunga pads which might also work. Not too sure there are many places in central new york (Syracuse area) that can do a good job with the felt, but I am heading back to MN for the holidays and have used George's Shoe Repair in St Paul in the past. I suppose Fix it By Mail isn't too far away either.

Exactly where are you getting blisters? Inside Bone or outside? And What part of tongue is giving you problems? I think I am having the same problem?....but only on 1 foot??? I am having problems on my inside left foot, not the large "ankle bone", but the smaller bone below that on the inside of my foot?.....Looking for solution....??? Help

Thanks

The problem I am having with the tongue is with the large "ankle bone" rubbing on the side towards the front of the foot. I did get blisters on the smaller bone that you mention for the first 6-8 times that I skated. I thought about getting the skates punched out in the area, but after my feet healed up it, there hasn't been an issue. I did cover my whole instep with really thin medical tape (J&J brand) when I skated which eliminated the friction while my foot healed and the skate liner broke in.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread, but would Graf size 8 705 tongues fit into a size 6.5 One95 skate properly or be too big? Thanks.

For me, the Graf was a size up from my One95/TOs...so a 7.5 in Graf for you. Since they only do full sizes, I would rather go with a 8 and have more tongue than go 7 and have a smaller tongue....but that is a matter of pure personal preference. Based on my experience the extra 1/2 size is very nice.

I thinknew tonques would help your problem....but be sure to try everything else posible before replacing tonques....Come on guys...lets help this fella, he's in pain!! Any more idea's? What about a thicker sock in that skate? To keep fropm rubbing? Its a movement thing, if your getting blisters....so stop the movement, stop the pain! Try baking? again?? Sorry can't help ya bud!

I forgot about that, thanks for bringing that up.

I had the same problem in my TOs. Like everyone said, the thick white felt Graf tongues would prob fix the problem for good. I have just been using oval cut outs of Dr. Scholls in soles, placed between my skate and the problem area on my ankle.
