CCM Skates

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

thinking of a switch from Bauer to CCM skates...hard to find any useful reviews on CCMs, I'm thinking of either sticking with Bauer and getting 8000s or switching to CCM and getting a pair of 952 or 1052 Super Tacks.

Are CCM skates as shitty as I've been led to believe (There seems to be a lot of anti-CCM members on this board)? And will I feel a difference from Bauers if I change the holders to TUUKs? Help!

It's all about personal preference.

Actually, from a totally impartial opinion the quality in CCM products has sslipped in recent years. I used to love their stuff, I don't like any of the current stuff. I still hold out hope they start making decent stuff again.

Honestly, I don't think skates are personal preference. I could PREFER to wear CCMs...but my feet do not allow me to do so.

People's feet are all different - maybe personal MATCH would be a better choice of words.

I've been wearing CCM skates ever since I started playing...which was about 4 years ago. I havent had any problems with them, I love CCM skates. Right now I am wearing CCM Vector 6.0's and I love them

CCM skates are not shitty at all. Vector skates have been known to severely break down over time, but the Tacks line of skates are rock solid and some of the most durable skates out there. If durability is a major concern for you and you want to buy a pair of CCM's, just stick with the Tacks like and you'll have absolutely no problems at all.

Here's my two cents. Take it for what you feel it's worth.

As you are probably well aware, the best skates are the ones that fit your foot. That's the starting point.

Personally, I would never buy the "latest and greatest" of anything. There is a huge difference between bleeding edge and leading edge.

Manufactures are constantly in a hurry to put new products on the shelf so many go untested. That's why Vapors are falling apart and Vector eyeholes are ripping out -- yet people keep paying top dollar for them. Call me a skeptic but I don't have money to burn.

Looking at CCM, I'd consider the Tacks line. They've been around for like 100 years so there has to be something good about them! But keep the following in mind:

- The higher the number (i.e. 652, 852, 952, 1152, & Pro) doesn't necessarily mean "better". Stiffness is also a huge factor. I can get around okay, but I only weigh 165 pounds so 852's work fine for me. Going to a Pro Tack isn't an option as they'd be too stiff.

- CCM Tacks fit a wider foot. Like other skates they have multiple widths, but rule of thumb is CCM = wide.

- Some folks don't like the ProLite 3 holders. Apparantely the front of them breaks easier than other kinds. I've never had a problem, but I haven't blocked any bullet shots with them either. But having said that, there are lots of ProLite 3 holders in the NHL.

Good luck.
