TotalOne tongue inserts

Recommended Posts

there's been a few posts here & there on the subject, but not sure if there was anything conclusive:

few people (me included) clearly think there's a correlation between the overall skate stiffness & which insert is used ie the skate gets noticable stiffer when a stiffer insert is used.

But others (mls) suggested they haven't noticed any change in stiffness when they switched to a felt tongue

Plus One95 had a regular tongue & was plenty stiff so what gives? Is it just a perception or the overall skate stiffness of T1s does change with different inserts?

never had the skates but I know a bunch of guys that do, the reflex tongue is just a gimmick.

really don't want to be a douche, but locigally, hou could a skate stiffen up in the quarter panels from a tongue insert???????

I never said anything about "stiffen up in the quarter panels from a tongue", but from a personal observation the entire skate stiffens up when a stiffer insert is used.

JR had similar comments in his review - until he got x-stiff inserts the skate wasn't 'clicking' so there's something to it, I just can't put a finger on it

I was using the medium inserts before I put Graf tongues on my TOs. I didn't notice a change in stiffness.

I don't think it's a gimmick. I actually felt some use of it. I had lace bite issues, because I leave my tongue outside of my shin guards. Let's just say, the reflex tongue got bent, and creased the hell out of it, which caused a pressure point on the top of the ankle. To relieve that pressure at first, I took the inserts off and it felt way better, because the pressure wasn't there anymore. However, I decided to put them back on, and put my shin guards over the tongue, and it solved the lace bite issue. (However, the lace bite could've been from the elite waxed laces as well, since they're thinner than regular laces). But the point was that, going from having no insert at all to having the stiff insert in there felt a lot better. It does have a spring board effect, which I feel helps a little. Not sure if it's worth the price, but I guess every little difference might add up.

Any other blanket statements you care to make about equipment you have never used but your buddies the experts, have?

Definitely not a gimmick. I have two pairs of Total ONE skates, one with the Reflex Tongue and the other with a regular felt tongue. You can feel the difference between the two.

Hey I was thinking about putting in a white felt. Is there any way you can send me a picture when you have the time? Also do you like it better than the reflex tongue? Thank you I appreciate it.

I have been skating pretty much the whole time in the Xtra stiff certs and the few times I have switched to the other inserts the skate just felt sloppy not stiff enough for me

What did you want me to take a picture of specifically? Just the tongues? After skating in the Reflex Tongue I do prefer it over the felt tongue. You do notice a big difference in stiffness and I seem to get more jump with the Reflex and the Felt tongue now feels a bit flimsy. I also like the fit of the Reflex Tongue better because I go tongues in and it wraps more comfortably around my shin.

It's not a gimmick. It actually works. From experience, people will have personal preference. For me, I went to graf tongues. I love the classic felt tongue, but the reflex was the only other tongue I had ever tried that I liked. It changes your stride a bit, but quarter stiffness is questionable.
