RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted March 21, 2011 I was talking to a guy at work about the year end hockey tourneys in town this past weekend. He was telling me about the tie breaker they used in every round up to the semi final. They don't play OT or Shootout in the early rounds. If it's tied...the first tie break is whoever scored first. Then, the team with few penalty minutes...Third...and most crazy...they flipped a coin *L* Anyone else have odd tie break criteria. The 6th tie breaker was the "Tournament Director's choice". In other words, if it somehow got down to the 6th tie breaker, he would chose the team that went on. I'm thinking it was put in there more as a joke. It was far fetched to even get past the second tie breaker without breaking the tie...

If the score is tied 0-0, it goes to total penalty minutes. If still tied, whoever got the first penalty loses. Hamilton house league rules.
greyraven8 9 Report post Posted April 25, 2011 I remember the Huff'n'Puff tournament that used to be in Stanley (township just outside Thunder Bay, ON) and later moved to Delany Arena in Thunder Bay. Was a tournament designed for players that weren't in a league. They had some weird ways to decide a championship winner if tied. Once they had players try to shoot (with their hockey stick) a frozen turkey into the net; I think they started trying at the blue line but had to move it up to somewhere around the top of the circle or maybe even the hash marks. Other times they went from 5 on 5, to 4 on 4, etc. for a certain length of time until someone scored. Also, I think the championship trophy has a plunger as part of it.The players on the team that won it all each got a sack of potatoes. JTully317 11 Report post Posted April 26, 2011 Tournaments always have weird tie breakers if you look through the tournament rule book/program. More likely than not it will not go past a second tie breaker. As was already stated I feel that some tie breakers must be for a laugh.
raganblink 82 Report post Posted April 26, 2011 Played in a tourney that for the championship games (1st, 3rd, 5th places) if tied after the end of the game, it went to 5 on 5 for 5 minutes. then 4 on 4 for 4, etc until it was 1 on 1 for 1. if still tied after that, goalies were only ones remaining and played until there was a winner. needless to say it never got past 4 on 4. sabby47 2 Report post Posted April 28, 2011 Our last tie-breaker in our tourney is quickest to shotgun a beer, lol. It's never come down to that one.
