Deepest Fitting Skates

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Which brand or brands are known for having the deepest fitting boots? Is there a specific model that fits deeper than others in the same line? I have some one100's that I really love, but my left ankle is starting get sore. The problem is the inner ankle bone is significantly further forward, more so than even my right ankle. My right foot fits the boot great. My left, on the inside, not so much. I just ordered a bunga pad to see if that gets me over the hump, but short of going totally custom, if I had to go looking for something else, what should I look for? I had some Easton Synergy 750's that fit great, even on my left foot, but they broke down way too quickly and I really didn't like the feel or pitch of the Easton holder.

I'm having the same problem with my left inside ankle bone, but I'm having it with Reebok 10k's. I just found out about Bunga pads and if you don't mind I would love to know if they end up fixing the problem.

I wonder if I could punch that area out with Reebok's, since the air bladder ends right there?

have you tried getting that area punched out?

might help you out

Dude, I wish!! It's too far forward, right on the lace eyelets. Nothing to punch out and nowhere to add padding. Just hoping the bunga pad helps or else it's sell these!

Graf 709s... really deep.

Thanks! How's the heel in the 709's? I had some Graf 707's once upon a time and wound up selling them because my heels hurt so bad. There was very little padding in the heel area of the 707's. I was getting Haglunds or something. So, I seem to also have heel problems on my mutant feet!

Could anyone that know rank the top brands (Bauer, Easton, Rbk, CCM, Graf) and their different lines from deepest to shallowest?

709, I got the newer one with the composite outsole and mesh like boot liner. So far its pretty good. I had them homebaked and the heel lock is pretty good. I normally install lacelocks on my skates, but not needed for the 709.

I'm guessing it all depends on your foot.

Bauer Flexlite 4.0 works for some people

Graf 709 works for some people

Graf G70 Ultra is another (same as 709 but narrower heel)

The G70 is the same width in the forefoot as the the 709? Or are you just talking depth?

G70 has a narrower heel.

I had a pair of 670 which were one step down from the G70 but has the same fit. It has a narrower heel compared to my 709.

I'm still awaiting the arrival of the pad I ordered. I ordered from bungapads.com and their communication and customer service suck. If it ever arrives, I'll let you know. That said, I had laced my one100's all the way up, albeit loosely, and that is when I got the ankle bone pain bad. Last night, I left the top eyelet undone, and my ankle pain was reduced considerably. Not sure if that will help you, but I'm not going to experiment with them laced all the way up anymore.

Bunga pads can sometimes help just like the lacing pattern or leaving the top eyelet open, they have worked for me in the past. As for a deep fitting skate, If my memory serves me correctly CCM U+ Pro was the deepest skate around for awhile. a another vote for the Flexlite 4.0's if you would like to stay with Bauer.

Contact Silipos to find a dealer near you. I know the owner and sales director personally, they're great people. They make tons of gel applications - they used to make Bunga's.

Just to add my 2 cents - I have rather short but volumeous feet and for a number of years I used Graf 709 skates. They were comfortable and reasonably stiff but eventually wore down after about 5 years of playing (1 to 2 times a week for 8 months a year). A little over a year ago I switched to Bauer one95 skates and found them a to be ever so slightly more roomy and almost as comfortable. I selected them after trying on just about every top line skate and with respect to volume found the one95 and 709 to be the deepest (and the only two that passed the pencil test for me). As an aside it was quite the adventure in adjusting to the one95 pitch after skating so long in the 709.

Just some info as my foot may be volumeous but in a different shape .....

edit - CCM may have been another skate deep enough, just didn't fit my foot in width. Never was able to wear CCM so can't offer much advice on that front

Crash

I have the same exact problem, as well, with my Vapor XXXX skates. My left, inside ankle bone is larger and more forward than my right. Both get beat up when skating, but the left more so than the right, obviously. I too just ordered a bunch of Bunga pads too in hopes that that might help. Don't know how long they will take, as you said. Sounds like they are really slow. I did actually get a response from their customer service when I emailed them, though. Ha, ha.

I did also run across the Silipos brand that JR mentioned and considered them, as well, but I've already ordered from Bunga, so we'll see how it goes. I'm sure hoping one of these items solves my problems too because when I mentioned "new skates" to my wife, she wasn't thrilled. I think I will also try not lacing the top eyelet, as you did. Sounds like it helped a lot.

Let us know how your Bunga pads work out for you (and which ones you used). Thanks!

Isn't the steel longer too? I had similar problems with other brands before my One95s purchase a couple of years ago because of an Accessory Navicular bonein my right ankle (didn't know that was what it was at the time), skates would fit fine on my left but cause problems on my right. It would also throw off the fit of each skate on my right side, and the only brand that was able to form to both feet was One95s. It was so ridiculous that I ended up PMing JR out of frustration and he suggested I go for a fit.

I'm still wearing them! I came from Grafs and Vapors before these, and the first skate in One95s were awkward, then I read JRs review that its like skating on rails! Once I got used to them, I love my skates!

Well, since posting this thread, I did eventually receive my bunga pad (after no communication from the company). I haven't used it yet, because since leaving the top eyelets unlaced, I don't have ankle pain from my left foot. The biggest problem I have now is my dang bunions getting sore. I have tried several lacing patterns and may have finally settled on a combination of lacing and thicker socks. This is a new issue for me. But, like I said before, I have mutant feet. I'm seeing a podiatrist next week. I plan to bring my skates with me. I'll likely get the area just back from the toe box punched out when I have time to take my skates to the shop.

I ordered my Bunga products. They told me that they should be shipping probably next Monday, May 16th. Don't know how long it will take after that.

I skate tomorrow night, though, so I'll try the top eyelet undone method and see if that helps me too. Also, as I came across a Famous Footwear store the other day, I saw these for $5, so I bought some. Just something made out of nice, soft gel material and large enough to cover the whole ankle bone. If leaving the first eyelet undone doesn't work, I'm going to try using these on my inside ankle bone in the meantime as an alternative.

Did any of you use the Bunga pads, and if so did they work out?

I've had me SE16's for about a year now, and I skate 2-3 times a week usually. Recently I started getting pains on top of my foot/ankle. I have a high instep so I'm guessing it's because my skates aren't deep enough enough. It seems strange though that I got the pain after skating on them for 7-8 months. Could it be because the skate is breaking down? Anyway, what skates should I be looking at for a high instep?

I haven't had to use the bunga pad since I went back to keeping the top eyelest undone. I've had it in my bag ever since, just in case. I'm seeing a podiatrist now and she's likely going to recommend orthotics. Once I see how those affect the fit of my skates, I may have an unused bunga pad for cheap.

I meant to add that I used some bunga-like heel sleeves when I had some Graf 707's a few years ago, to help with sore heels and they worked great! I could skate pain free, so if you decide to try some and can deal with it changing the skate volume a bit, they should help.
