Adult league ref no shows

Recommended Posts

As I'm sure everyone else has dealt with from time to time, so I pose this question:

Is anyone involved in an adult league where if one of the officials doesn't show, there is a refund of his fees returned to the two teams involved?

I'm in a roller league where we have a couple of games a season scheduled at 1030pm or later ni understand this happens, but last night was our 5th consecutive game at 1030 or later that had only 1 official.

I pay a significant money for this league and in the rules it promises 2 officials and a scorekeeper at every game. Id love to know if any leagues have set of precedent of returning some money for league fees when refs son show or if I have any other recourse?

Edit - sorry about the spelling my iPhone won't let me edit the previous post I'll try to fix it asap.

Same here. I've actually had this happen to me twice. Got paid $180 for two games back to back.

Around here, the one ref gets time and a half and the organization pockets the other half. Is it the same guy, coincidence, or the assignor just not doing his/her job?

in my league if no refs show then the game is rescheduled, if 1 ref shows there is no refund and I'm pretty sure the ref doesn't get paid double, if there's no scorekeeper we just add 2 extra minutes to the 3rd period.

in our league it is EXTREMELY rare for there to be ref absences though.

We get double if we work a game by ourselves. $70 for low-to-mid level, and $90 for the higher levels of men's leagues.

I used to ref mens league and we got double if we worked the game solo. Which I thought was fair if you really worked the game, running full ice all night. But it ended up being abused. For example, a ref would call around trying to pick up "extra nights" or agreeing to take someones night knowing he was the other scheduled ref. If you see this happens often with one or two refs, I would bring it up with the league. From my experience, the guy that "set it up" called the whole game between the bluelines. The guy that got screwed working himself, worked goal to goal. I think the double pay is fair for the ref that works his butt off, but unfair to the teams when it is taken advantage of.

And from a refs perspective, if you have a guy busting his tail to work your game for you by himself...give him some breaks. He won't catch all the penalties and offsides, but as long as he tries don't scream bloody murder over a offsides when the poor guy is sprinting up the ice to catch up to the play in game 4 of his night

Something else to ask the league, myself and another guy lived within a 1/2 mile of the rink. If there was a no show, the league director would always call us to see if we could make it in for games 2 to 4. You might want to find out if they make an attempt to get another guy in, especially if it is the later games where they have an hour or two to get someone in.

I certainly sympathize with any ref having to work a game by himself. Been there, done that, it really sucks. The extra cash is what it is, but usually it hardly makes up for the head aches. If you're reffing anything faster than beginner level games it is absolutely exhausting as well. More often than not when I've been in that position players have been good humored about the situation. I also see a player's point of view on the whole thing. If the league promises two refs and a scorekeeper and doesn't deliver on that they should compensate the players in some way. If you went into a restaurant and paid for pie and ice cream, but didn't get the ice cream, you would refuse to pay for it. More so if it becomes a common problem.

We have it from time to time, and the ref who shows up gets paid double for his time. The ref who doesn't show up gets a note on the schedule and I believe after 3 no shows is removed from the rinks rotation for a month. Most of the teams in our league won't say too much to the ref working solo, but we sure do stretch some things since we know he won't catch it all.
