First Game Thursday Night

Recommended Posts

Was asked to play in a scrimage with the Womens Development Clinic..yeah, yeah yeah, don't laugh, it's good practice and my first official game..Very nervous..Hoping I don't look like a big buffoon out there given that I will most likely tower over these women and have 100lbs on them...

Anyone have any recollections of their first game?

I remember sitting on the bench and it felt like I was wearing a diaper (never had hockey pants on before) with a big shit-eating grin on thinking "I'm in a hockey game!". I was 43. Still remember it as if it was only three years ago.

First game was years ago. Just joined a team and headed down to the local "rink" for a game. Basically it was post your team on the board and they would choose who plays who. Ended up playing against the top team at that time. We ended up losing 5-2, with me scoring both goals.

Looking back, I wonder how it would be if I were to go back in time with the current skills (or lack of) that I've got, and infuse that into the my past self... obviously keeping the speed and stamina I had back then.

Good luck with the game... just remember to have fun.

Remember to breathe and relax! Alot of guys get wound up and run out of gas really quick because they get really excited. Skating in a game will be different than skating in a practice, there is alot more intensity. Just relax, have fun, don't try and do everything and breathe

To say that I was a bit nervous the first game that I ever played in, would be a severe understatement

My wife and some of my co-workers decided to come out and support me in my first game; which was nice to see their support; but it made me even more nervous.

I remember that I was hoping that I would not have a heart attack on the ice; my brother passed away from a heart attack while playing ice hockey.

Even though we ended up losing the game and that I don't think that I've ever been tired from any other sport that I've ever played, it was the start to the beginning of a love affair with playing ice hockey!

Oh yeah, I also remember being sore as hell for two days after

My first was 5 1/2 years ago at 38. First shift, felt like Herman Munster out there against all the others...turned to try to get the puck and plowed right into an opposing player...knocked the breath right outta me. After I stood up, ref comes over and says that he was ready to give me a penalty for interference until he realized that I couldn't breathe...:)

I've got the pre games jitter right now as well. Just. Trying to calm my self down and relax. Not really working that great however.

First game in a new league is always weird, you never know what speed the game is gonna be played at. I usually go hard the first shift and end up out of gas in the third.

My first real game was a month ago. I was pretty nervous when I got to the rink cause i wanted to do so good and not let my team down. I also didn't know anyone on the team so I wanted to show everyone that I could help the team. The first period was a little intimidating but once i got over being nervous and just had fun, it was awesome.

I started playing at 18, and I'm turning 21 in October. I've never been more excited for anything than I was for my first game.

i was 13 at the time of my first game. the only thing i remember about it (or the first 2 seasons i played) was that one of my teammates got crushed on the first shift of the game and broke his collarbone. scary, to say the least.

my first game after not playing since high school was at 21. i had 3, my center had 4, and the other wing had 1 plus 7 assists. wish id been that good when i played in school...

I now don't think I'll ever forget it. I had such bad anxiety but once it started it was just awesome. Never forget it.

I'm going to be the same way. Been playing roller for years, but never ice. First game this upcoming week, I believe. Already feel a little goofy about it, just want to get out there and do it.

I remember my first game - only about 4 years ago. Way nervous before hand - I kept checking the bus schedules to make sure I wouldn't miss my connection, and checking and re-checking to make sure I had all my gear in order. I was terrible, naturally, but it was a pretty informal beginner league, and everyone was really helpful. Even when I tripped over the opposing goalie. It was a great time and I was totally hooked.

My first game with full equipment was in '08, was 26 at the time. Fell a couple of times, skating backwards was nerve-wracking. Don't remember my first league game, though, other than that I was late because it took forever to get my skates sharpened.

Had fun, though, got addicted, and am a lot better now. Feel pretty good that I can now hold my own against some guys who have played Junior A/B in the past. I'm not great, but I make them think twice before they blow past me :P.

Then again, I've been playing A LOT since I started. Probably average 3 games/pick-ups a week, if not more.

Only mention it because a lot of guys I know who start late in life get frustrated during games and pick-ups. I tell them the best way to learn is to not worry about anyone else and just get on the ice as much as they can and their skills will improve dramatically.

You really have to love the game, though, because it's a game where a lot of the movements are so unnatural that you really have to play more than once a week to get better.

I'll drop almost anything if a game comes up now...and apparently spend almost anything if a new stick comes out...

The first time I played in 20 years was this past March. I showed up out of the blue at an advanced mens shinny skate at a local rink. I wasnt too nervous since it was just pickup, but I did have some embarrassing moments...

For one, I was wearing a red jersey and believe it or not, I couldnt figure out which team I was playing on for the first 10 minutes, LOL....

I just kept floating between the blue lines til I figured out who was passing me the puck, LMAO.. too embarrased to interrupt the play to ask someone and it took 10 full minutes before someone passed the "new guy" the puck. I think I almost died for lack of lung capacity somewhere along the way. It took me 2 months of 2 nights a week to get my legs back somewhat.

Noone really wanted to talk to me too much the first few nights, but I did get some smartass remarks about being the only guy alive who's using a REAL WOOD stick and REAL LEATHER skates haha...they've both since been replaced...

I managed to go through my first 3 1/2 men's league seasons without a huge collision. Tonight, with like 6 seconds left in the 2nd, a guy who had about 7 inches on me (I'm 5'7) and I collided at full speed. His shoulder went into the side of my face and I went like 3 feet in the air horizontally. I was all dazed on one knee and he came over and apologized right away, even though it was a total accident. My forearm and the left side of my face are totally purple. Didn't miss a shift.

It was the first time since I started playing that I REALLY sat on the bench and thought to myself "I'm a hockey player!!"

First game last night, first goal (first of the game, as well), and we beat the defending champs 7-6 with a ragtag team of mostly roller hockey guys I put together....

Not a bad debut, for the entire team.

Almost ended up with the Gordie Howe Hat trick, even.... lol

My first game I was age 4 or 5, I couldn't sleep the night before because I was so excited, worried, and anxious for the game. I went into the game completely worried, ended up scoring four goals and having two assists. Not too bad.

That's awesome! Hope my first game goes that way. Our second rink has been down for the past month and a half so there have been ZERO opportunities for me, but have been practicing at every opportunity..My only fear is stamina..I fear I am so out of shape I am going to run out of gas during the second period..
