CCM Vector Helmet and Cage

Recommended Posts

I just bought a CCM Vector cage to go with my CCM V10 helmet. I had bought the V10 while I was still in just a visor, but then I almost got a slap shot from the point in the face, and said forget it... I installed my old Bauer 4500 cage for a couple games, but it just doesn't fit right, and I don't like the chin cup.

Anyway, I got it on there - and wow, its SO much farther from my face than the 4500 was. It's also chrome, unlike the Bauer's pewter-ish color. (I think black looks better, but I think chrome might be better for visibility). However, I have a question about the J clips. Specifically, they don't seem to fit quite right. Rather than sitting right in the clips like the 4500 did (in clips made for the 4500), the J-clips sit up (but in an awkward angle, where lowering them I dont think would help). It looks like this:

Is that right? Should it really be like that?

Oh, as a side note... anyone looking for a set of white ear loops and sling chin strap? I bought a set for my white helmet, and while it would have looked good with the visor, it looks kinda goofy with the black chin cup and strap.

The only potential problem is if the chin cup can be shouldered into your chin painfully. Normal fitting J-clips (when coupled with the soft padded chin cup) are there to help prevent this from happening. If yours are within a half-inch, I'd say you're probably fine, especially considering you're coming from a half-shield. J-clips that sit flush on the top of the cage are ideal, but is rarely the case.

If the J clips are attached EXACTLY like the picture above you may want to move them down one notch to make them closer to the cage when it's at it's most comfortable position. I find it odd that the Bauer cage didn't work as I know from personal experience that the 9900 and 8500 cages fit the V10 perfectly.

Maybe I just have a big/long face, but even with the j clips in the lower position, my cage NEVER closes all the way with any helmet/cage combo I've ever had. Regardless of the brand there's always at least a 1/4" gap, generally more. Seems to be the way it is for a lot of people, don't know why they don't have more clip position options on helmets in general. Doesn't matter so much anymore, now that I play non contact mens league, but when I used to play contact hockey it would always suck when I got hit in the cage.

i got the same problem with v08 size small and FM480 size medium. j clips are on the lowest setting but the cage still can't flush into it. is it ok? or should i buy a larger cage?

Thanks everyone!

I find it odd that the Bauer cage didn't work as I know from personal experience that the 9900 and 8500 cages fit the V10 perfectly.

I guess it's not so much it didn't fit... more like it wasn't comfortable. I don't like the chin cup, and I found myself always having to push up the bottom of the cage to get the helmet up higher on my forehead (helmet fits fine - it was always great when I had the shield). I also had a hard time sometimes closing it because the shape of the Bauer seemed to cause the earloop tabs to get in the way of closing it. Mostly no big deal, but hey... a cage is only $30 or so. Whatever.
