how do I improve my shooting form

Recommended Posts

The new videos don't change my advice at all.

Second, get a normal curve and learn to shoot with that first. Then, decide if you want to use a more extreme curve like the ovechkin.

Third, roll your wrists over when you shoot. Leaving the face open, especially with a curve like that makes it virtually impossible to keep it low.

Fourth, go to a lighter flex, the stick doesn't appear to be loading at all.

Fifth, stop handling the puck so much before shots. It's a bad habit to get into and you will find yourself doing it in a game.

I agree with Chadd. Go back to a normal curve until you get things figured out. I also agree with what JR mentioned about learning to shoot from the heel. To me it looks like you are sweeping it way too much. When I start my shot my face is closed in a cupped position. I can not really explain it so I searched on you tube and thought this might be a good starting point.

worth a try.

Do not be afraid to try an intermediate stick. Guys like ovechkin are using 80 flec sticks and he is a grown man! Grown as in 6'3 240. In my opinion if you can not flex the stick with a snap shot it is too stiff not to mention you are handicapping yourself as well.

the lowest flex stick i have is an ovechkin one95 77 flex. i consider the letestu to be normal...at leas as normal as i can go. like i said i have been using some form of an ovechkin for over a year now. i have tried to go back to a p88 and CANNOT shoot with it anymore. i should be getting my 3pk of t90s that i ordered in a 75 flex in the proper length so i dont have to cut it and lose flex. without changing curves what can i do to get more flex? the ccm in the video is 85 and i can flex it easy. its just hard to incorporate it into my shot.

Watch the video I posted. Then work on involving your lower body a little more. Build up your core strength and try the p92. Can you call corners without issue? If so then keep using the ovi. If not try a different curve. I know you say you are, but it does not look like you are getting much flex out of your stick in the video.

The new videos don't change my advice at all.

Your post about not handling the puck so much was a revelation to me personally, I never even thought of that when practicing and I can think of many times I have stick handled to puck too long for a defender to jam it away in a scoring chance! Gonna practice that myself.

Any as for the OP, I am no expert but it does not look like you are transferring weight much at all especially in the 2nd video. The weight transfer is going to give you your power and it seems like you are just steeping into shots and not leaning/transferring weight from back foot to forward foot.

Also, your follow through in the video is pointing towards the bush to the left of the net, you wanna point to the net.

Finally, your swing motion looks like a top, in that your hips are doing most of the rotation and your legs stay put. You need to rotate the whole body and get the power.

In all, I disagree with you and your first video showed much better form than your last. I would ditch the pro stock sticks altogether (the curves that is) and get a retail curve with a low flex. Again I am no pro and am just giving you my opinion.

This was exactly what I was trying to explain, thanks for finding a video.

I was going to say something similar but Axxion's post pretty much covered my suggestions. The weight transfer aspect was the first thing I noticed about your videos. When transferring from the back foot to the front foot, try leaning more into your shots. Drop your right shoulder slightly and bending your right elbow more when shooting will help with leaning into the shot and make it so you rotate your whole upper body, not just your hips. Lifting your front foot and stepping it forward into the shot will help with the weight transfer and getting use to it off ice. That should help you flex your stick more. Make sure to roll your wrists and point to where you're shooting as well. Here's an extreme example of an NHL caliber shot:

Thats my advice, but I'm no expert either. It might sound kind of confusing without actually showing it.

I've watched a lot of the videos uploaded by the guy who did them in video that skyscrape posted. They are worth a watch. He does a pretty job at explaining things in a way that makes sense. I would say give them a look. They might help as well.

Heel to toe. Focus on technique before power ... As you practice more and get the right technique then start putting more power into your shots

Did you watch the Ovie video? Notice how he doesn't use his legs as much? He's got the technique for a quick snap shot and doesn't need much windup. Once he uses more leg power his shot would be more powerful.

I've been practicing in a schoolyard near my place. Using a 2' by 1.5' board as a surface to shoot from. No windup, just snap shots. The rink I play at is pretty small, so not much time for windup

Why would you buy a $189 stick to try a flex that you will most likely not like? I think that this may show why you like the Ovi clone curve. They are hard to get and if you have them you are special. Same reason many people buy pro stock stuff. I've personally done it many times, but realize how pointless it is.

I'm sorry about the rant. Go out and buy a woodie with a pm9 clone and cut it down 1.5 inches shorter than your ice sticks. This will compensate for not being on skates. The curve will not do much work for you like the huge toe hooks do. Practice rolling the puck to the toe and flicking it off. That's your basic wrister. Then practice cupping the puck on the toe, dragging it towards yourself and snapping it with the mid heel of the blade. That's a snapshot. Look where you want to shoot, and use your body to put more energy into the shot. The curves you are using can cover over underlying problems in technique, and although you have a good basic technique, these curves make it hard to focus on basics.

Much respect to you for posting this, and hopefully well see your improved NHL esque form sometime soon. :D

I posted that mostly as a joke haha there's probably a 2% chance I would have bought that. If money wasn't an object it would be fun to goof around with a 55 flex stick haha

You can't shoot with the Ovechkin curve either, isn't that what started this topic?

You start a topic asking for advice, then give every excuse under the sun why you can't/won't follow any of the suggestions people give you. Next time, just say "look at me and my videos, I'm an attention whore" in the title so we know to ignore and not waste out time trying to help.
