Poor man's backyard shooting target

Recommended Posts

dg12mg.jpg

I was playing with the notion of some sort of big tarp when I saw a golf practice net at Walmart. $20 seems a lot more reasonable than what is asked for by some of the other products! It's 9' by 7'. I'll have to get around to adding targets, should be easy enough. The board was found at Home Depot for something like $15, I haven't tried any sprays yet.

Nice. You might want to spray paint a 4x6 box on there to simulate a goal. You don't want to get too used to shooting high or wide.

Pretty nice, at least you have a big backyard or whatever that is, I'm always at risk of breaking my neighbor's stuff =/

What kind of board is that? Im thinking of getting one to shoot but I dont know whats best. In the past I have used PVC but it didnt work so well (didnt spray it though). Also, in this sense, I was actually at one of these big hardware stores, and asked for a silicone-based spray, but they didnt know WTF I was talking about.

I live in Europe, but I would think they ought to have something similar, probably comercialised under a different name, but component-wise should be similar. Anyone know what alternative name it might go under? Thanks

One thing to try before you go out spending money on a board. Go to your local hockey rink and ask if they have any of the plastic boards that they use for advertisment on the boards. They rinks I have been to have a bunch just waiting to be thrown away and they are happy to give you one. I found these are really good for shooting and stickhandling. I happen to have quite a few of them that I use to shoot and stickhandle on and they have held up really well. Just some food for thought, it saved me a lot of money.

How sturdy is it? Does it hold up to shots well?

If your refering to the boards I use they hold up very nicely, they are quite flexible if you are trying to move them around but they are just fine if put on a solid surface. I even use it on the grass to shoot and it works very well.

Id that just the thin fiberboard? I've found a few uses for that and it would make a great slide board for training.

That is awesome!

I would buy a cheapo hockey net (official size).

Plus i would pick up like 20-30pucks, just because after you are done your 5 pucks, going to pick them up sucks after, it's to quick. At least after 30 shots, it gives you a "break" when you go get them.

Not sure about Europe, but here in the US they had also no idea what I was talking. I finally found it by wondering around the big-box store. The brand I got was "Blaster Dry Lube Silicone Lubricant" for $4. Makes a huge difference on the cheap white board I bought (based on MSH discussions). After a while I get a bunch of tape/puck marks that really add resistance, so I have to recoat.

Actually, the cheaper the net the flimsier the posts are going to be, obvious, but if you're going to be shooting often. A cheap net will fall apart and warp on you very quickly

Just adding to the options, I use whats called Thrifty White Board. It's a raw dry-erase board without the metal border, thin particle board with a plastic laminate on top. Spray a thin layer of silicone lube on top (B'laster brand) and it's slick as ice. Just be sure to lay it on a flat surface or it'll bow and crack.

The board is ~$12 for 4' x 8' sheet (I cut it to three 4' x 2.66' sheets) and the spray is ~$3/can. I also attached a thicker plywood board to the underside just for a little reinforcement.

The board I use is just particle board, it might be my imagination but I think it's a little less "slick" than it used to be. But either way it's a good cheap alternative. The net has held up fine in a short amount of time, I got more pucks now so I don't have to keep walking back and forth like someone mentioned! I am surprised that the golf training net is strong enough to hold up against hockey shots, but so far so good! I also bought some red yarn and tied it through the meshing into a 4' x 6' rectangle.

I found the same board at Lowe's too. For less than $20 I had a solution, and now I just need to take my old driving range matt and prop it up as my target. Amazing how easy it is to reuse stuff around the house to make a workable target.

I think it helps immensely if the net/target gives a lot. And, a really weak shot.

I just use a pop up practice soccer goal and that thing buckles down to the ground when I hit the "post." After a second or two, it jumps right back up. And no crazy deflections that way.

Once I hung a few empty cans in the goal to aim at, for that backyard white-trash shooting-gallery feel. Highly recommended. Neighborhood kids also make good targets.

This is definitely true. I have my net hanging very loosely and no holes yet. I'd be very worried about putting holes in it if it was taut.

Thanks to everyone in this topic, and especially _RH_, I put this together today:

I need to put another board beneath the Thrifty White Board to make a more solid shooting surface but otherwise I'm very happy with it. Thanks again to all.
