Ice Hockey Pants VS. Roller Hockey Girdle+Padded Shell

Recommended Posts

I am just starting to play ice hockey and I don't want to buy all new equipment so I heard that I could wear my inline girdle + a shell instead of ice hockey pants. My concern is that my inline girdle does not provide all that much protection, compared to ice hockey pants at least, and I have not seen any padded shells to provide a little extra protection (especially lower back protection). It would be great if you could post a link to a PADDED shell so I won't get beat up too badly taking hits and blocking shots.

Thanks guys

Most padded shells only have thigh pads. In fact, I have never seen a padded shell that offers lower back protection.

Could you post a link to a website where I could get a shell with at least thigh pads?

You mentioned protection from hits. Do you know if you are in a checking league or are you referring to accidental bumps? If it's the latter, I honestly think a roller hockey girdle is enough protection.

EDIT: Regarding blocking shots, I'd modify my response depending on how hard the skaters you will be playing with, shoot.

I haven't actually joined a league yet, I have just been playing pickup ice hockey, but the league that I will soon be joining does have hitting. Honestly any padded shell would work just fine, but I have yet to find a shell that is anything but very thin shorts whose purpose is only to have different colored pants (to match team colors I suppose). I just don't want to have to buy new hockey pants when I could find a padded shell to go over my girdle, but I can't find any.

That's because they don't exist. There are uppers and lowers that connect together, but those are only padded thighs in the shell. You'd be better off buy a middle of the pack model of ice pants.

Here's a shell with some kidney padding. But as written above, the middle line pant would be better value probably.
