Photos of my charity hockey game

Recommended Posts

Myself and another guy set up Put Cancer On Ice, where we run a charity hockey game each July in honor of Dave Fay (who was the Caps beat reporter here in DC for 28 years). We have some Caps alum come and play with us regular joe schmoes, Verizon Center announcer Wes Johnson has done Emcee for the past couple and Caps play by play radio guy Steve Kolbe plays too.

Anyway, the game was yesterday at Kettler, and the guys from Russian Machine Never Breaks came out to cover it and took some great photos.

When the Mod squad skate was on in DC, it was actually the same day as the game a couple of years back, so some of you know what we do.

Anyway, I think in terms of the game and fun level for the players, yesterday has to have been the best (I know there are 2 modsquad members who played yesterday, I hope they can attest to the same)

So, if you are interested, click here for the story/pictures.

That event looks awesome, congrats! If you don't mind me asking, how much do you guys typically raise during an event like that? Or is it more for awareness and keeping the memory alive?

I'll let Smoke name specific amounts if he chooses to, but the larger events (like the Dave Fay Memorial) do raise money.

I did an event for LifeShare the same day as this event called Hockey For Life. LifeShare does all the organ donation and transplant services here in Oklahoma. I am close to the organiztion bc I lost my first wife in an automobile accident and we decided to donate all her organs. They helped me through a lot of the stuff that goes on during the grieving process. Alot of my friends still dont know what LifeShare is when I talk about them so I wanted to do something to help them raise awareness first off and then money secondly.

I only had 2 months to plan this event and I organized a 12 hour marathon where players would come , pay ( donate) 100 dollars to be involved. I got jerseys donated , a bunch of food, a bunch of items to raffle, a signed used stick from a local guy who is a prospect with an NHL team, and 2 sticks donated to give away I also had to purchase an S19 stick , Warrior Dolomite stick , 2 pairs of warrior franchise gloves to entice people to buy raffle tickets. We also did a 50/50.

It cost me/Lifeshare a little over 2,300 dollars to put the event on and we raised almost 4k ....so 1500-1700 bucks .

I am really looking forward to getting 10-12 months to plan next years event and think with more time I can get more players , businesses, and people committed to supporting this event. I this next one I will do more like a tournament format as a huge issue with this one was organization of the games. I had a ton of people say we might make it so it made it hard to set teams up and plan the games. I only had about 40 of the 80 players come that I wanted so that was a disappointment. A lot of them couldnt donate 100 bucks so I had to accept smaller donations. It was a fun time but 40 adults ( later it was less because a lot of guys went home) playing 12 hrs of hockey is very tiring HAHA !! Hope this answers some of your question.

We raised about $5000 on Saturday, and about $20,000 overall for this and past events

Sorry I wasn't able to make it out Smoke.... Nice job on raising the funds!

Oh yeah, I will second Smoke's notion that this game was probably the most competitive and evenly matched of all the games played to date. If regulation had been another few min (or there was an actual OT), I think VA would have won ( rightfully so ;) ).
