Worth Trying Different Skates

Recommended Posts

I'm in a pair of Graf G35's right now that fit great and have zero problems with them aside from weight. They are kind of heavy and clunky compared to pretty much every other skate on the market.

I found a pair of One80's in my size for $80 used with pretty much new steel (including baking and sharpening). Is it worth trying a different skate that should fit similar just to save some weight? Or is it something I just won't notice on the ice?

I'll add that I've already had my Grafs profiled to match the LS2 radius and pitch, which works much better for me.

For $80 I'd say yes it's definitely worth trying. Find the one that's MOST comfortable for you foot I'd say.

Yeah for sure, it's a $400 skate so even if they don't work out, you should be able to resell them for a lot more.

I guess I'll be the dissenting opinion. If you've got a pair of skates that fit great and perform well then saving a few grams here or there won't make much, if any, difference for you.

well, i just recently switched from 705s to 0ne80s and i think the difference is huge in many ways. plus, i think the weight is more than just a few grams when it comes to graf. that leather gets very heavy. my legs would fatigue enough where you get lazy. so for 80 bones, why not?

For $80 why not. If it gives you an even better fit for your foot than your Grafs it was the best $80 spent. If not you'll probably get your $80 back here or on ebay.

I might just do that, resale seems high enough.

Grafs literally fit perfect, cannot ask for better. And they should for $500+ with the SIDAS. So it's literally just the weight, slightly shorter runner length, and maybe a change in stiffness.

Crisis averted I guess, they weren't a deep enough fit when I gave them a thorough testing in the store. Definitely lighter, but if it doesn't fit perfect it's not worth it to me. I forgot just how much of a pain it was finding skates that worked great. Wish the Grafs weren't so heavy but not going through that again...

I don't know much about Graf construction. How does the quarters differ between the two and how does that affect stiffness?

My impression is that the Graf uses more material to achieve stiffness than the Bauer, which makes it heavier but more durable over time. It also has a much thicker liner which takes up negative space rather than being quite as heat moldable. Basically it seems to be designed to last a very long time at the expense of weight.

I could be 100% wrong though.
