How tall is your stick?

Recommended Posts

First, get your minds out of the gutter :)

I am contemplating buying a new butt-end and adding a couple inches to my stick. Right now it's about 3 inches below my chin on skates but I feel like It's still a bit too short. I'm 6'1 (off skates).

Do you guys generally go by the rule of thumb that the stick should be at your chin?

I'm just kinda nervous my puckhandling is going to suffer if I lengthen it. I'm kind of a shifty skater who likes to dart in and out and stickhandle in close.

Give me your opinions, please!

As fish notes, its all personal. I found a shorter stick (Up to my shoulders/ base of my neck) helped me bend my knees more, thus improving my skating. Shooting wise, I was still able to get sufficiant power into all of my shots too. There are some advantages that I will miss with a longer stick (Reach most of all).

I'm 100% agree with this comment.

I used to use an insanely short stick. I progressively started lengthening my stick to get more reach and improve passing. Stickhandling takes a little time to get used to each time I lengthen, but I've done it a bit at a time. That said, I still use a shorter stick than implied by that link. No shoes / skates, stick comes to my chin.

I use a bit longer stick (sometimes I play offense, sometimes defense). It comes up to my mouth on skates, bridge of nose without skates. I do have trouble stickhandling in traffic, but can occasionally pull off a decent fake one-on-one move because of the longer stick. The main reason I like it is for reaching those passes that would be off the mark just barely and poke checking.

Are you Forward or Defense? D needs longer sticks for the poke check.

I'm normally a forward, but I play D as well sometimes.

Here's a recent pic of me.....tell me what you think.

All depends on how much control of the puck you want, I find that a shorter stick gives you better stick handling control, but a longer stick helps improve passing. In the end it does all come down to personal choice and what feels right to you.

Now, to me, that looks like a very long stick. But, as most of the guys here will tell you, it's all personal preference.

I like my sticks to be down just below the bottom of my neck without skates, so right about the middle of my chest once I am on the ice. I feel I can control the puck much, much better with the shorter twig. As a smaller, speedier forward, my stickhandling skills are a huge part of my style of play and how I am able to contribute to my team.

I like whippier sticks. Like I said before, I'm a smaller guy (16 years old, about 5'11"), so I am able to get away with using intermediate sticks (as a matter of fact, I just ordered two intermediate TFG shafts last night). All I have to do is take the wooden end-plug out, stick the Wave-Bridge blades I already bought in the other end, tape it up and go. I don't have to cut the intermediate sticks down very much, if at all, so I don't lose any of that wonderful whipage.

Stick length looks good, to me it looks like you need a deeper knee bend.

Yeah, I'm working on getting a little lower to the ice.

If I do find that with a shorter stick my passes aren't so accurate and crisp.

Another thing I'm worried about is having my lower back act up if I cut my stick down too much. I've had that happen to me in the past.

Mines upto my Adams apple on feet, I play Defense. Used to use a stick about mid nose on skates, but a Mr. Thoman Kaberle changed that. ;)

Yeah your sticks crazy short. Even Nicky's stick is almost as big as yours.

EDIT-- Oh yeah, my stick comes up to my nose in socks. I like it a bit longer faceoffs.

To my chin (barefoot). 54" from end to heel. I'm 5'8" (and a bit) It's an Easton shaft without the end plug.

But, I recently bought a stick from Buzz (Sher-wood Momentum). I know it will be longer than I am used to...but I'm gonna try it before I cut it down.

From the picture, it looks like the blade lie may be wrong. On the bottom of your blade, is the blade uniformly worn off (correct), or is it only worn off at the heel (wrong).

Nah, the lies right....it's a Sakic 5.5 but it looks funny in that pic. It's normally flat down, just when the pic was taken it was up.

I used to go the whole 48standard shaft plus 8inch end plug...but since I've bought some shafts from some of the members here...I've been working on using a shorter stick...I'm 5'4", and the int XN10 shaft comes up to just under my chin without skates.

As someone who messes around with his stick height constantly, my advice to you would be to cut your stick arond the avg. and just get used to it. I mean realistically, one inch shorter or longer probably isnt gonna make a huge difference. Just go with what you feel confident with and get used to it

That's a really fuggin long stick.

I sometimes use the 48" Inno 1100 uncut with a plastic cap and it comes right up to the tip of my nose. It's perfect and I love that the shaft doesn't need to be cut. :D
