Maximum Edge VS FBV

Recommended Posts

Went to a shop by my new house and asked if they had FBV. He said that it was 40 year old tech and that Maximum edge is better.

Anyone else heard of Maximum Edge sharpening?

that's funny, I just viewed the Maximum Edge website and their "See us on Discovery channel" video looked like it was filmed well over 10 years ago.

My son and I have used Maximum Edge here in Calgary for about 4 years and have no complaints. They are very consistent (at least here anyway) and recommend them to most. As far comparing to FBV, I can't comment other than Maximum Edge is a conventional sharpening using their own process. I have seen many professional guys get sent there including guys from the flames to get their skates altered (hollow, profile, etc) from the local owner, who is a friend of ours.

At the end of the day it is what you get used to and personal preference.

Maximum Edge was started by Bob Allen out of Windsor, Ontario. He teaches his skate sharpening process to the staffs of many professional clubs. He also offers licensing agreements to those who go through his training. While a Maximum Edge shop isn't certain to be better than other local options, it adds credibility - and I'd chose a Maximum Edge shop over another in a new town.

Bob's not a fan of FBV (or Blademaster's BFD) because the diamond doesn't cut the wheel (dressing is more "grinding" than dressing), consistency is challenging, and the concept has been tried - unsuccessfully - a few times over the last 50 years. I'll do FBV for myself because I have control. I'd want to know the sharpener well if anyone else did FBV for me.

I can't see why the guy, who knows his stuff, just doesn't do fbv and use the same principles from maximum edge... Or am I missing something.

Max edge is just a process for producing two sharp edges on a piece of steel. It's not magic, it's not voodoo, it's simply one method for sharpening skates. Unfortunately, people that are "max edge shops" have a lot of money tied up in being associated with them and most are not interested in anything new or different. Add in the max edge affiliation with blademaster and you will rarely hear any of them say something good about the FBV.

Funny but the guy said the same thing just opposite.

The opposite being "No NHL team uses FBV"?

I can see people who paid a good amount of money for territorial rights to MaxEdge claiming that it is superior to a technology available to any shop.

And by statement alone that should tell you know he's full of crap.

I wouldn't expect anything else from shops that don't offer FBV, Z-Channel etc. Simply because they have an investment to protect, if they tell you it's good and they don't offer it you are probably not going to get your skates sharpened there. $$$ lost.

Local shops around here say the same thing because they don't want to make the investment.

Many good points brought up in this thread and many people will have different feeligns towards both systmes, I know that at my shop we do have the baldemaster flat bottom version which is different from the blackstone flat bottom in how the shape is. I have used for awhile the blademaster version but after getting my skates profiled by one of my guys here and just the traditional sharpening done I found the overall feeling similar to the flat bottom. If you like the flat bottom and it works for you that is all that really matters both sides will defend themselves like anyone else when confronted with something different.

To me in the perfect world I would have my skates Profiled the "MaxEdge Way" then I would have the "Z-Channel" put in the blade and finally I would use the "Max Edge' finishing process at a 1" FBV (90/50) hollow to top it all off.

I dont use the MaxEdge method in full but use the theroy as well as Skt8Fuel for finishing and the MaxEdge type profiling method.I have had a great amount of success this summer with it and plan on using all methods and or parts of them to get the best results for the players I work with.
