2011-2012 Suspension thread

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if the NHL could go with a Disciplinary Committee. Say have Shanahan, someone from the NHLPA and perhaps one or two more hockey person on that committee to decide what type of disciplinary action needs to be taken on whatever offense is brought up in front of the committee.

The problem would be having them all available within 24 hour, or less, notice. Shanny has said that he often calls around the league to see what GMs feel about situations before he makes his decisions.

Lurker, not an often poster, and obvioulsy a Nucks fan.

Sedin's hit on Keith should have been a 2 for roughing/boarding, no ill effects came to Keith other than he got angry. It happened fast, refs missed it. It was simply finishing his check by Sedin, but not to make an excuse for Sedin, it was a poorly executed hit as he contacted his head. If anything supplemental- a game. Tops. It was a poorly executed hockey play, somewhat akin to Rome on Horton in SCF's last season... but that obviously resulted in an injury and was a far more explicit and obvious play for officials to get a read on.

Keith's hit on Sedin is inexcusable. It's not a hockey play gone awry, it was a deliberate attempt (perhaps not to injure) but to mete out some level of revenge. Puck is gone, in the air, and Keith doesn't make a play at the puck he simply plants his elbow cap in Sedin's chops. Keith has no history of foul play, Sedin is hurt. He should have got 5 and a game, refs missed that and gave him a minor. Shanny will likley and justifiably hand down a 3-5 game suspension imho.

Connecting either incident to the other is fools errand, but great argument/debate/messageboard chatter fodder... also connecting any injury to a suspension is also fools errand. Player A could hit Player B in the same fashion he hits Player C. Player B could pop right back up un-injured, Player C could suffer a career ending concussion ala Savard. You cannot match Suspension to injury.

There is no way to be happy as a Hawk or Nuck fan in this instance. No amount of suspension will satisfy any Nucks fan as they're not going to Suspend Keith as long as Daniel is out. There's no way (as far as we Common folk know) to tell how long Daniel will be out. Connecting any term of Suspension to Sedin's injury is just not sound judgement. Obviously any Hawks fan will say that if Keith gets suspended so should Sedin. It's all a matter of whose ox is being gored.

I predict Sedin misses a few games as a precaution or as treatment to a minor concussion (I hope) to as much as he has a bad egg now and potentially misses entire remaining regular season and some/all playoffs. I also predict Keith will get a few to 5 games as a suspension. Other than missing the cake in the bank account, this is a sort of blessing to the Hawks in that Keith is a workhorse and could use the rest.

It is what it is. to get angry about it on either side is just a waste of energy. So is trying to connect the dots saying Keiths' potential suspension could be great based on a Revenge Plot. Circumstantial evidence is just that, his word against Henriks.

No amount of Suspension will satisfy any Nucks fan. So my advice to Canuck Nation is just relax, we caught a bad break. Get over it and move along. The Past precedent with the suspension on Rome doesn't apply. Shanny wasn't the Sherrif then. (and believe me there's rabid dog fans on the radio etc calling for a massive suspension to keith. I think those fans are suspending reality imho)

Contradiction, no?

It would be pretty tough to come to a quick decision with a committee like this.

No, had the hit hurt him he would have obviously suspended him (Sedin) and likely the refs would've either penalized, or unlikely:tossed, Sedin at that point...thus no Keith on Sedin hit happens...unless you have a portal to a parrallel universe.

I feel like the refs felt like they missed it (The Sedin v Keith hit) and then missed the retaliation (allegedly) and were at the end of the day going be conservative with on ice calls and leave the mess for sherrif shanny.

You know if Keith was hot about the hit on him by Sedin that the refs would've been aware they missed *something* Players talk to officials and the other team. they're not mute out there on the ice/bench,

You can't say that injury will not impact whether to decide on suspension or not, what I am saying is length/term of suspension shouldn't, and realistically cannot, be tied to the injury as you have no way of knowing term and severity of the actual injury.

The committee approach would also lead to more inconsistency. As it is, from statements Shanahan has made in the past, he doesn't make decisions without input from others in his department.

The chain of events that followed the no-call on Sedin is interesting: the Keith elbow, and the series of scrums. The league should be thinking about its officiating and control of games, as well as the supplemental discipline. Good jobs on both can lead to fewer problems in games.

It seems it might be, in comparison to suspensions given to repeat offenders. I'm wondering how hard they're looking at Sedin's hit, or if they feel they don't need to care since he's losing games anyway.

Now that would be awesome...

Shanahan: We can't condone vigilantism, but we can't deny that Sedin got what he deserved...

It was interesting to see Gary Green's comments on NHL Network this evening. When asked why people around the league don't like the Sedins, he professed to have no idea. I'm amazed that he hasn't at least heard that some people consider them whiners and divers. Whether one agrees with these opinions or not, we've all heard them, and they do form a basis for the dislike some folks harbor. It's incredible that someone making his living from reporting on the NHL hasn't heard a whisper of this.

There are a lot of people on this site that spend a lot more time watching NHL games than some of their analysts. In a lot of cases, they get some highlights and a description and they just riff off of that. They aren't watching the games and picking the clips to talk about. They also work for the NHL, the last thing they are going to do is be critical of star players.

I've made the assumption that people like Green spend a lot of time talking to other hockey people, and would pick up a lot from the grapevine. And the Sedins aren't run-of-the-mill newcomers that no one has ever talked about.

He hasn't heard of it because it's just stuff people say when they're are jealous of one's talent. Same happened to Crosby. There was an interview a while back with Trevor Linden and he professed the professionalism of the Sedins. They get little credit for what they do. They rarely miss games, they are leaders, they generally keep they're composure while being chased night after night by the leagues top goons, they win games, they arent selfish, they are prominent figures in their community, they both won the Art Ross and Olympic Medals. What else could one want?

The more I think about it, the more it seems to me that perceived retaliation was a factor in the length of the Keith suspension.

He doth protest too much.

As for Keith, he got what he deserved with 5 games.

And some would say that Sedin got what he deserved for his cheap shot

Wow. Those that do are truly brainless and deserve a concusion themselves.

anyone else pick up on the irony here?

Who would applaud a hit to anyone's head that results in a brain injury?

Having been through one, I would never do so. Nor was it even remotely "applauding" an injury, it was merely an observation. That said, I don't feel sorry for anyone that goes headhunting and ends up having someone do the same to them. Karma will eventually end up catching up with you. I also wouldn't feel sorry for Keith if the situation was reversed, so there is no bias due to the teams.

I have heard a few rumors from usually reliable sources that Sedin's injury played a factor in his hit not being "officially" reviewed. Those rumors were the basis of my comment, not any malice for anyone involved.
