Bauer APX stick anyone tried one

Recommended Posts

I know the stick just came out and would like to know any feed back on it. I have used the X60 and felt that the stick was too stiff and i even tried a 87 flex. I went to the LHS and checked it and liked the weight and matte finish. I am wanting to buy this stick or the Reebok Ai9 which comes out on Friday.

The 85 seemed to be a similar flex, but release was hard to compare because of such different curves. My totalone felt to have a softer blade, but the puck feel was almost exactly the same. As I said, it kicks similar to the x60, so you can feel the lower kick point mostly, compared to the mid-low on the s19. You may want to go down in flex if you use an s19 or totalone though, it plays very stiff. Let me know if you want to know anything more specific! :)

The Ai9 is a mid kick stick, while the Apx is a low kick stick. If you found the X60 stiff, my guess is you might be used to mid kick sticks? Most low kick sticks feel a bit stiff to me too, because they're designed to be stiff at your bottom hand but whippier by the blade, and you just don't feel the flex as much when shooting as you do with a mid kick stick (at least, this has been my experience). Mid kick sticks are designed to flex closer to your bottom hand. For example, I could feel quite a bit more flex when shooting with my 77 flex one95 than I do with my 77 flex X50, despite the fact that both are Bauer sticks. I have owned plenty of low and mid kick sticks, and can shoot well with either, but my personal preference is to really feel the stick flex at my bottom hand, if you're the same way you might prefer mid kick sticks to low kick sticks in general, in which case the Ai9 could be the better choice.

Also, not sure of your height/weight, but if you're an average sized guy (say 5'10" - 6' or so), with an average build, there's nothing wrong with using a lower flex stick (a 75/77 flex), especially if you're finding 85/87 flex sticks to be too stiff. A lot of people always just buy 85/87 flex sticks, never trying anything whippier, but I know my shot improved significantly when I moved to 75/77 flex sticks, and I know many other people who've had the same experience (though some people feel completely differently, and hate whippy sticks, it's all personal preference at the end of the day).

Thanks for the feedback, i am 6'1 and 220lbs and i have been using the totalone for the last 2 seasons and i do like the mid flex and as mentioned when i do wrist shots i do not drop my bottom hand lower so going to a low kick stick which i have not had much luck with finding one that suits me. I am intrigued about the reebok stick as it is a mid kick. I did like the feel of the APX but buying a $280 stick and if it does not work then i take a loss. I did like the Easton RS but i do not like the selection of curves

Well actually, the general feedback on Easton sticks are that they play a bit whippier than rated.

The stick that toddmanley referred to was a 90 or 95 flex, and I said that the APX played similar to it. I lost some velocity on my shot compared to my 85 flex TO when using an 85 APX, but gained some when I went with a 77.

It plays much like the x60 but with better puck feel.

I have to agree completely with this. If you liked the X60, you will probably like the APX. I haven't been a fan of vapors since the XX, and the APX is no exception.

If you like the supreme, I would avoid the APX.

Again, I agree completely.

lol gotcha, misread the post.

Anyone get a sense that the APX is a bit lighter than the X:60? The Aero Foam II shouldn't be THAT noticeable...

It is for sure. The rep claimed it was the new resin. "since its so much stronger and more technologically advanced we were able to use less of it, while still making the stick stronger". Time will tell if the stick is truly stronger.

I've used my APX a few times, and so far I like it. I'm coming from mid-kick sticks, the Bauer one95 being my favorite. I definitely notice the difference in kick point(s), and I take a lot more wristers/snappers than I do when I'm using a one95, but overall I'm really enjoying the Vapor. It has similar puck feel to the one95, so it seems the Aero/Power dual-core provides a compromise in weight/puck feel between the one95/X:60. The most noticeable differences on the APX are the shaft (rounded corners and no tactile grip) and the dual kick-points.

FWIW I scaled an APX and an X:60, same curve, same flex, and the APX was 22g lighter. I did a similar comparison with an S19/RS, the RS was 10g lighter. Take that with a grain of salt, as this is a really small sample. In my opinion balance and feel is more important than total weight, but it's interesting to see the difference. I can't say how much of the difference in weight is the aero foam, or other differences in construction, but the APX is noticeably lighter.

i can bomb shots and im used to a total one. I give this stick the thumbs up for the top stick so far this year. I plan on tring the reebok aswell. stealth im not a fan off.

I dunno why people say the apx is a low kick. They advertise the dual flex points and it holds true. I can shoot slappers and wrsit and snap shots just as well as with any other stick with a low or mid kick. The apx isnt bs, this stick rocks.

Really loved the apx. I shot hard with it at SJ (2 goals what up!), but seriously, I can't remember being this pumped for a stick to come out. Especially with mybauer, I'll definitely be picking up a stick or 2 for pick up this winter.

Got one last night and used it twice since then. I'm not sure if I like it so much though. I prefer mid-kicks and I loved the TO but I decided to give it a try since I heard a bunch of people saying they liked it. I need to get used to shooting with it first though since I use primarily mids. I think the biggest thing I don't like about low kicks is how I can't feel the flex and I got a 77 and cut it only about an inch and a half. I will say the puck feel is great.

can anyone confirm this please? my one95s are on their last leg but the puck feel is too good to think of any alternatives, if APX feels the same that would be fantastic :)

The APX should feel similar, but not exactly the same and that's what I noticed as well. Power Core 3 is only used on the bottom half as you know.

just giving an update on the apx as I have had it for a couple weeks now. Unreal stick. every shot comes off hard and puck feel is very good.

Having tied all three of the new sticks my votes go APX, Stealth, AI9. Apx takes the title. definetly my stick for the season.

I really like my APX Grip with P89. It has great "pop" on any shot I take. The puck feel is as good as the TO. I would like it as much as the TO's I have if it wasn't grip. I'm not sure I like the graphics as much as I do the TO's either. I don't think you can go wrong with either of the Bauer sticks.

Being a guy stuck in between choosing the P92 Lie 5, P89 or P106 I have to ask, how do you like using the P89? I prefer the P89/Vanek for stickhandling (less is more to me, in that regard) and backhand shots/saucer passes, but my snap shot seems to suffer in comparison to the P92 and P106 patterns. I can't help but wonder if it's just me.

I love the P89! I used the Sakic/P92 for the past couple years. Prior to going "big curve" I used the PM9. The P89 is a great in between curve IMHO. It's also not hard to get use to.

Love my APX. Puck feel of my one95 which I loved, but the flex of the X60. My only complaint is that the graphics/shaft of the one95 didn't show wear as quickly as this apx does. I'm just hoping the APX has half the durability of my old one95.

After a few days with it, I'm really liking the blade. Much better puck feel, likely from the T1 core materials they're using in the heel. Quick, hard kick, nice and accurate as well. Plays really great.
