All inclusive tournaments, anyone play in them?

Recommended Posts

My team wants to start playing in more tournaments and I saw a couple websites that offer "all inclusive" tournaments(like weekendhockey.com and chehockey.com) and was wondering if anyone had experience playing in them? I did some searches but really cant find much about them or reviews about how the tournament was. They seem a little expensive but they offer a bunch of different divisions and considering it covers hotel and sometimes even nhl hockey tickets, doesnt seem too bad. Anyway, if you have played in one, what did you think about it? was it worth it? how was the competiion within each level? I appreciate your feedback. Thanks

We did one in Niagara Falls a number of years ago and it was absurdly unbalanced. Everyone lies about their abilities and the winner is the team that sandbags best. The hotel we used was marginal, the rink sucked, the organizers didn't follow through with most of the promised add-ons. We still had a great time, but it had nothing to do with the quality of the tournament.

That tourament was really bad. It's the people that you play with that make it fun. It doesn't matter how cheap or how expensive the tournament is, it's what you make of it.

I'm with Chadd on this one. We did a Philly one, and we registered in the lowest division, as per our lack of talent level. We played our final game against two guys who play/played in the WHL.

I skated in a CHE tournament in Phoenix this spring. To me, the tournament entry fee ($159) was abusrdly high. The rooms at the resort our team stayed at were really nice, and actually were pretty cheap if you had 4 people or more. The tournament itself was pretty disappointing. Would have been more fun drinking and hanging with the guys poolside all weekend instead of in between games. The PHX tourney drew I think, 93 teams. Games were played at rinks all over the area, you never had a game in the same rink. And with that many teams and games being played, the crew of referees they had were pretty burnt out and stopped giving a fuck by about noon each day. I'll probably go back just because it's one of the few chances I have to skate with that group of guys, but if you took them out of the picture, I'd never play in that tournament again.

My ladies team used to go up to a che tourny up in Montreal and that was pretty fun. I don't remember the price but it included a hotel and bus transporation to and from the rink. I thought the teams were really even also and they served you beer in the locker room after the games..

Were you playing at Les Quatres Glaces in Brossard?

The games were at Aston Ice Works(?), and we stayed at a hotel in downtown, right next to the Ben Franklin.

Yeah, Aston is right down there. Nice facility.

I played in a CHE tournament there maybe 4 years ago. This was still in my minor hockey days though...

I'll pretty much echo the sentiments above. D/E in a tourney is not going to be even remotely close to D/E in your local rink.

Played in a tourney up near Toronto several years ago and played in the lowest division. I watched their B/C division and the level of play was easily AA/A for your local beer league.

The reason to go is to hang out with your buddies and check out the locale as opposed to the hockey (unless you're a really good team).
