Severe Lace Bite problem

Recommended Posts

The hard foam in the Bauer One70s eventually crease and fold, and the sharp corner can cause lace bite "all of a sudden". I had a tread with pictures on here somewhere...

Exactly, that stiffness is the cause of the tongue breaking down and the lace bite itself.

Oops, I was unclear. There is a hard foam in the Bauer One70 tongue that creases and folds. The sharp corner in the tongue causes the lace bite. If you pull out that hard foam and replace it with a thick piece of felt things will be back to normal.

I understood, it's the lack of flex in the skate that causes the breakdown/crease in the tongue and the lace functions almost as a garotte.

I used a gel pad (impact gel inserts for shoes) cut to shape, sewed 2 pieces of leather around it and cut slits in the leather for the laces to feed thru to hold it in place. It's survived around 300 skate sessions this year so it lasts well and without it I could not skate.

If the skate doesn't have enough depth for you, the tongue isn't at fault. If there is enough depth and it is only happening at one spot where the laces meet your ankle when you stride, then the issue is with the stiffness of the boot. If that is the issue, you can try backlacing to spread out the contact point.

I played tonight and did the back lace thing and it was great. Still a little pain but so much less pressure. So I think that plus a bunga pad maybe the solution I am looking for. Thanks chadd and everyone else for your insight.

strosedefence34: Looking at your first picture (in post #29), this is probably what the inside of your tongue looks like:

I can see where the crease is in your tongue.

If you unstitch the inner part of your tongue you will be able to pull out that hard foam "pringle chip" hyperbolic parabola and put in some thick felt.

ktang thanks I will have to look into it. I should have looked into it now since I will be away for three weeks, and when I come back I have a game a week. I will have to talk to my LHS see if they can do any repairs if not I may have to send them out. I don't think I am crafty enough to do them myself.

edit: it has been a little longer then 3 weeks obviously, but I figured I would update with my situation so if anyone has the same issue they can reference this thread. I received the bunga pad and did the back lacing and it has been working great so far. No real pain my lace bite is all healed. I will have to look into possibly repairing the tongue when I have some time off my skates and can send them away as per ktangs suggestions.

Curious if the CCM Lace Bite Protector is the same thing as the Bunga Lace Bite Pad if not what is the difference? I see that they look similar. Just not sure of the difference.
