Add more heel lock?

Recommended Posts

I may be way off base here, but to me, if you're having noticeable issues with heel lock, you're in am improperly fitted pair of skates.

your not, if the rest of the skate is perfect and all you need a bit more heel volume i dont really see a issue in some cases

You're 100% correct. However, since so many people buy skates online or without spending sufficient time trying them on, they're stuck with gimmicks like these or buying new skates.

I tried nearly everything on when buying my skates, and the best fitting (Flexlite) still works best when I use the Stable26 socks and the thinnest inserts. I don't think they are a gimmick or that these skates don't fit properly. They are a nice fine tuning.

You could also get some of the RBK/CCM lace locks? Costs about $3 a pair, and you could use come countersunk screws to install. Takes about 10 min to do everything.

I did get these skates at the LHS. The rest of the skate fits great. Part of the issue i think is thats its a lower end skate. ( I just didn't have the $$ this year) And you just cant do that much to custom fit them. I like everything else about the skate but a little bit of heel lift.

I use the ezee fit booties from IW on some older skates that I had same problem with. They worked great for me and cheap fix too. I've since found a different brand that fits me without aids but I think even with customs some people's feet just need minor things to help the fit. On 24/7 it looked like a Rangers player, think was Anisimov, putting on some kind of sleeves (bunga's??).

Or, nothing stock/retail fits quite right, and it's either spend more money than they want on customs, or try something like this.

I wear something similar, with gel in the heel to help with some developing Haglunds. On my right foot, which is bigger, it helped a lot--the bump has almost disappeared. My left foot, which is a size smaller, hasn't been quite as lucky, but I don't think the bump is getting any worse.

I spent $40. Excellent investment, next to buying custom skates.

I've got a bump developing on the back of my left heel, slightly to the left of centre. I've been skating in Vapors which seem to be the right toebox, instep and volume for me. But maybe the heel is starting to open up a bit.

Would these help?

Try some Grafs. They make many different fitting skates depending on your heel shape, how pronounced your achilles is, etc....helps you maximize heel lock, and they come in narrow and wide.

Every pair of Grafs I tried were terrible. None of their models fit, and I spent a lot of time trying on their models. It's unfortunate, because I was hoping they'd have what I needed off the shelf. I've also read more bad things about their skates than the other manufacturers, so, yeah.

Again, they helped my larger foot by filling in a little more volume. My smaller foot still rubs, but I think it's prevented the bump from getting bigger.

For what it's worth, I ended up buying custom skates today, actually. Measurements they took (skate size-wise) were 11.25 for my right foot, 10.75 for my left foot, both 3E width. I'm currently wearing 11.5 Vapor XXX skates in a EE. Both of my skates are currently cracking at the sizes, right at the widest parts of my feet. Looking back, I should have had them stretched a touch after I got them. Not much was going to help the length issue.

When I bought the gel pads, my right foot stopped having so many problems, so the small drop in skate size seems about right and should help. My left foot which has more problems dropped nearly a full size from what I was wearing. Therefore, I think if you've got one foot larger than the other, and you're stuck with retail skates where you're essentially trying to fit the larger foot, these can be quite helpful in filling up some space in the heel.

My Grafs are the first pair of skates i've had that truly felt like they fit like a skate should. Although I have a really narrow foot, and not a really wide foot. You can't even get a narrow width skate from Bauer, CCM, or Reebok now unless you custom order their most expensive skate and add like $150 to the purchase price, which is why I decided to try Grafs, and am glad I did. But to each his own I guess, and whatever fits best

I totally agree. I do have a very wide foot and putting them in the Grafs killed me. Honestly, if they fit, I would have gone with them regardless of what I heard quality-wise from them.

I do currently play with two people in Grafs, and they love them. Just not for me.

Any idea how to add more heel lock to a pair of CCM U+ 04's?

The ezeefit booties and waxed laces worked for me. I only have a heel lock issue in my left skate when skating backwards, so I only wear the one ezeefit. I knew a player that took a piece of felt and sat it in the heel area before he put on his right skate....that worked for him.

Had same issue with my old x60's. Ezeefit booties in the thinnest variation solved it for me.
