Career Ending concussions

Recommended Posts

I am writing a 4 page paper for my Sports Broadcasting class about how Shanahan is preventing concussions from happening and penalizing illegal hits. Does anyone know anyone who suffered from concussions leading to him not playing in the NHL anymore?

Marc Savard is a common high-profile recent example, though many still hope he could come back some day.

The Staal brothers might make an interesting example for inclusion in such a paper...Marc's career certainly wasn't ended over it, but you could talk about the way the aftermath of the hit seemed to affect Eric's play for quite some time. Obviously, the fact that it was his brother changed the dynamic quite a bit...but it wasn't just the concussed player who took quite some time to recover from the incident. Obviously, it was deemed a clean hit as well; not all concussions can be prevented with enforcement on illegal hits.

Not to quibble -- although your teach might! -- but I think it's important to realize that Shanahan is not "preventing concussions from happening," since concussions can happen during legal hits or even if a guy slips and slams his head on the ice. However, he is trying to lessen the incidences of concussions by suspending those he deemed to have made an illegal hit, hopng that it will serve as a deterrent to other players.

Also, the league itself has changed the rules on hits to the head in recent years to try to lessen the occurrence of concussions.

Regarding Kariya never being the same, I heard Kerry Goulet, who founded StopConcussions with Keith Primeau, tell people worrying news during Crosby's first concussion hiatus. He said that no one had ever missed as much time as Crosby due to a concussion and returned to the same level of productivity. In same ways, that hasn't proven to be true with Crosby, since he scored 37 points in 22 games, but he also was knocked out for another 40 games or so, meaning he only scored 37 points in an 82 game season.

Patrice Bergeron has also had close to similar production. He had 73 and 70 points in the two years prior to his concussion, which he hasn't attained since, with 64 points this season being his next best, but some feel it's been his best all around season.

Still, it's a cautionary tale that most players haven't returned to being the same player they were after having severe concussions.
