Skate Weigh In....

Recommended Posts

A couple weeks ago, we weighed some composite sticks and it was a pretty popular so we decided to do it again. This time with skates....

So a couple weeks back, we posted a list of some stick weights on high end composite sticks and we got a great response, so we are going to continue this over the next few weeks in some different product categories. Today we start with skates in the price range of $599.99 and up (other price ranges will follow).

NOTE: this is not a list of necessarily the top lightest skates available, Not every model is listed, but we feel this is a good representation of what is present on the market. Secondly, Weight should not be your only criteria for purchasing a pair of skates...

Weights were measured of a single skate, size 7.5D. So listed below is the skate model, Weight of a single skate in grams, and that weight doubled to represent the pair.

Model

1) Bauer TotalOne NXG ----680g ------1360g ---------- $799.99

2) Bauer Vapor APX ----718g ------1436g ---------- $799.99

3) Bauer Supreme One.9 ----746g ------1492g ---------- $599.99

4) Bauer Vapor X7.0 ----805g ------1610g ---------- $599.99

5) CCM U+ CL ----830g ------1660g ---------- $599.99

6) Reebok 20K ----833g ------1666g ---------- $799.99

7) Reebok 18K ----834g ------1668g ---------- $599.99

8) Easton RS ----843g ------1686g ---------- $599.99

9) Bauer Nexus 800 ----890g ------1780g ---------- $599.99

So there you have it, a weigh in of top end skates, Bauer TotalOne NXG topping the list and the Supreme and Vapor lines taking the top 4 slots.

Let us know what you think and what else you would like to see compared.

Oh the days of the S15 are long gone. How I miss it. Such a light wonderful skate. :(

S15 was a light skate, Right up until it disintegrated a month later. Kidding. But I think I like the direction manufaturers are going. Slowly lightening skates without taking too much away on the durability front.

I'd be interested to see the weight without the steel... I think that there might be some changes up the ranking....

Helmets without cages are on the way.

And what if i just weigh the different companies steel and we do some math ha?

excellent point...

worth noting both the lightest skates come with fusion runners, got some used x60s that had been fitted with fusions, not weighed them yet but compared to my u+12s they are significantly lighter

FUSION saves 33 grams on size 8 compared to LS2 steel. Skates measured are 7.5, so the weight saved would be less than 33 on a 7.5.

Thanks for this! (I saw it on your FB page too.)

It helped put me over the edge in going with the NXG over the APX yesterday. :)

Maybe I'm just stupid but I'd rather buy skates which fit my feet than skates which weigh less.

The NXGs and the APXs fit your feet the same? You're much more likely to notice a poorly fitting skate than an 80 gram difference...

I thought the same thing too. The NXG's are built on a different last than the APX's I could be wrong. I do recall trying to stuff my foot in a 9.5EE APX last year and I never made it past the ankle of the boot. Whereas the NXG's i tried on this summer fit great and will probably fit even better had the forefoot been formed a bit wider.

I agree with HockeyMass's assessment a poor fitting skate will be something you will find your self trying to adjust rather than it have to be perform for you correctly.

It's good to know y'all know my feet better than I do. I'll keep that in mind next time I need skates. It'll save me some time. You can just send me a new pair of your suggestion every year on your dime.

As always, I spent over an hour just trying on several makes and models of skates. (Side Note: Stealth RS was surprisingly good. The quarters were pretty soft out of the box though. Concerned about their longevity.) At the end of the day, both the APX and NXG were an acceptable fit for me. (Nobody said anything about them "fitting the same".) Obviously, the APX was a bit shallower and definitely more narrow than the NXG. But, I have a "normal" arch and don't have a wide foot. Most would put me into a Vapor. The reason I've gone with Supreme's a time or two instead is because I find the ankle fit to be better to me. (I'm 6' 2" and go around 180#. I'm pretty lean/thin. Above the ankle on the Supreme's usually just "fits better" even though the forefoot may be a bit wide. Yes, "chicken legs".) I generally go with an aftermarket footbed in Supreme's to take up some of the volume right off the bat. With NXG I also found that going to the X-Stiff tongue inserts took away even a little more volume. From there, in my experience, upon baking, the width of a reactive composite skate boot can usually be taken in some with snug lacing over the foot and not standing up. (Same as a little looser lacing and standing up for a minute can usually convert depth to a little extra width.) The NXG was no exception. Having a little extra "wrap" around the top of my foot has never been a problem for me.

Like I said, the weight was simply what put me over the edge. It certainly wasn't a deciding factor.

APX and TotalOne don't really fit similar at all, but ok bro, no need to get grumpy about it. I'm not trying to criticize your decision, I just don't understand how a pair of Vapors and a pair of Supremes could be close enough in fit to make no difference.

It's all good. That was just my best JR impersonation. LOL
