Gloves: Easton RS vs Eagle Talon

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience with either the Easton RS or Eagle Talon gloves? I am looking for a more contoured fit, so I know a bunch of people like the Eagle PPF, but that would be too roomy for me. Any opinions on one or both of these mitts would be appreciated.

From the feedback I've read, the RS is the nicest glove Easton has put out in a while. Aesthetically, I disagree, but having tried them on I agree with the comments on the fit.

No comment on the Talon, but the RS is one of the most extreme tapers I've ever worn. I like the general fit. It's tight around the knuckles and expands out to the cuff to extreme proportions. There's more room in the cuff than any loose 4-roll you'll I find I think. On general preferences, the RS has a very stiff and straight backroom. I was not a fan of that. I actually like the 85S a bit more, as it's got more of a broken in feeling through the top of the hand right off the shelf.

Even if both are anatomical fits, they feel pretty different. Looking at the fingers, the Talons play a little long while I feel that the RS is more of a truer length proportional to other gloves. I wear 13" Talons and am somewhere between a 13" and a 14" in other gloves. As an example, I have to move to a 14" on the RSs. In terms of comfort, the MSH2 palm edges out the RS palm imo, though overall the RS fingers are more comfortable because of the odd segmentation placement on the Talons. This could be just me but on the Talons, the segments don't line up well with my joints, especially on the pinky, which caused discomfort.

Looking at the palm and backrolls, I still prefer the MSH2 over the Ax Suede, both already ahve the broken in feel so I suppose it doesn't make too much of a difference. I feel that the RS offers more protection as the plastic inserts in them are more sturdily placed and the foams are denser.

The wrist and cuff area is the key point when comapring the two imo. Traditional cuff and cuff extension placements on the Talons, nothing too significant and acceptable mobility. The RS angled cuff roll wasn't as noticeable when trying them on as when seeing them for the first time. The biggest problem I noticed relates to the sizing choice of the gloves too 13" gloves normally cover my inside wrists, but on the RSs, they were exposed. Moving to a 14" barely solved the problem. The biggest negative was wrist mobility. You can barely bend your wrist backwards without the cuff digging into your arm, side to side and downwards mobility was fine.

Durability is obviously still unknown with the RS but I've had some issues with the Talon. There's actually a review on them in the glove section so I won't elaborate on here.

The wrist mobility issues you sighted is a bit alarming...I also wear a 13" - I usually wear Bauer or Warrior and both have been a solid 13" throughout. I have smaller hands so I tend to like the fit of the more contoured fitting glove. So based on your experience, what would you rate the RS and Talon on an overall 1-10? Just curious, have you tried the Easton EQ50 elite? They look nice, but I think they will be too roomy as well.

I gave a final rating of 6.5/10 while fellow member Kyle Friedman rated them very high at a 9. My score won't likely change as they are now relegated to the backup/3rd string pair position. I've tried on the RS several times but haven't used them on ice so it won't be fair for me to rate them.

I like the EQ50s, the palms are very comfy and I like the fact that you can extend the cuff in 2 places to your liking.

Thanks for the link (strange I searched the forum for Talons and only found one thread  ). Do the EQ50 fit snug at all or are they more of a traditional more-volumous fit?

If you want a glove with a tight fit through the fingers and backroll that still has great wrist mobility I'd seriously consider the older 2010 Warrior Projekts - you can find them on clearance at many places because the new 2012 Projekts are out. The new Projekts also have a tight fit in the backroll and fingers, but I found the backward wrist mobility lacking when I tried them (they are MUCH tighter in the wrist area than the older Projekts).

The 2010 Projekts have been my primary gloves for ice for a while now and I find them comfortable, mobile and very protective - I don't think you can find a current model that's more protective.

I tried the RS's at Summer Jam. I wanted so badly to like them, but never got past how tight they felt around the knuckles and backhand area. I don't have big hands either. I can't imagine what they would be like for someone with bigger or thicker hands than me. The Easton rep was curious to hear what I thought. I told him I couldn't get past that feeling...looked like he'd heard that before.

I've never played with the Talons, just messed with them in the store so I can't really compare the two.

I prefer the 85S over the RS. The backroll is not as stiff, the gloves are more mobile overall and I like the all nylon look better. They also cost a lot less and the protection doesn't feel any worse.

I tried the rs and had the 85s. Quality is really great on these gloves and it is a great glove if you have small hands.

Unfortunatly I was in pain when wearing my 85s, mainly because i have pronounced knuckles and the 85s (and the rs) has only a one piece padding in that area and doesnt give or move much, and the inside liner is very thin so the hard padding was really pushing against my hand. It was a constant pressure when grabbing a stick. Never have i exprienced that with a glove.

To be fair to Easton. Other than that certian aspect of the fit, the glove was amazing. Great range of motion and the dexterity in the fingers was second to none.

Looser than Talon but snugger than 4 Rolls, similar to Vapor if not a tiny bit roomier in the fingers/knuckles.
