Tour Man

Gloves always stuck to stick tape

Recommended Posts

I switched from tacki-mac to stretch grip wrap. Lets me make a knob of any shape and have the ribs exactly where I want them. Really couldn't be happier. This stuff is great!

That's basically how I do mine now. but use white renfrew for the under layer/knob

Funny that we both have one bauer and one reebok stick. How come you leave the knob with no stretch tape?

I don't bother with an under layer, I just make the knob and the ribs. I like my grips as thin as possible.

I do the base layer, then the rib's, then grip tape. I leave like what usually is the size of the knob at the top so when i make the knob in white tape it's even. I just do one thin layer for the base so the tape grips better and its easier to remove when i need to do a new grip, just cut under the tape and its all in one piece. I like the feel of the white tape for the knob no idea why just started doing it that way and left it lol

As far as the sticks go i just got that AI:5 after reading that thread you made about stick haha

I'll add one more + for the grip tape method. Personally, I do my grip with normal white stick tape and then wrap it with the stretch grip tape. I have tried the renfrew grip tape but I much prefer the feel of the 3M stuff. It's softer somehow. But I'll use either.

Which tacki mac grips were you guys using? I find most of them to be far too thick, and that also seems to be the #1 comment I read, but nobody ever specifies which one they used. The Kane was the only thin one I could find, and they aren't anywhere near as easy to find, for some reason.

I also found it GAINED grip over time, as the rubber started to wear a bit.

Like I said, the only reason I go to grip tape now is because I like a knob too much. If tacki-mac made a kane grip with a half width knob, I'd be all over it.

Cut the knob in half with a razor blade. I use the wrapped texture Tacki-Mac which I believe to be the thinnest (no ribbing) and before they started making the small-butt model, I cut the knob down or in some instances cut it off completely.

There is no knob on the kane grips.

You can make a small knob with tape and then put the provided wrap from the take mac over that, then slide it on. That way you get a bit of a knob. I like taki macs a lot, but I've gone back to using a complicated tape job. I much prefer the grip of the taki mac over the tape though. Mine got slightly grippier as I used them.

Thats what I had been doing. Put on the kane grip, roll down about an inch, put a 1/2 size knob, roll the grip back over it. Worked well, actually.

I just prefer the stretch tape now. lets me do anything i want to the grip. Its not as grippy as the tacki macs were, but a whole hell of a lot better than cloth tape.

Ok, yeah, that's what i would have done if i was in your situation.

I used it and wore it out quickly, and never went back to it. I may try it again, i hear it's nicer to gloves as well.

It's nicer than cloth tape for sure. My gloves all look brand new still. The stretch tape isn't as good as the tacki-mac for grip or for saving my gloves, but oh well. I like how thin it is, too.

Does that taki mac stuff come in tape form that you wrap around, or is it tube like and your slide it to the point where you want it like the pics above?

It's a rubber tube you slide on. Comes with double sided tape that either has adheisive that is wettable, or it comes with a packet of adhesive (depends on when it was made, I think... only the newer ones have the packet). Some people just put hairspray on the stick to make the grip stick. There are various ways of doing it.

But yea, short answer, its a tube.

The pics at the top of page 2 (my post) is renfrew stretch tape. This stuff:

That grip tape is all I ever use. Im Hoping to try some other solutions that are more durable.

The tacki-mac is very durable if you can find a style you like. There was only one that came close to being okay for me (Kane), the rest I didnt like at all. So back to grip tape I went. I havent been using it very long, maybe 3-4 months. Havent had to re-wrap a stick yet.

True, I've had the Tacki-Mak Ribbed Wrapped grips on my sticks for 2+ years & to me they still feel brand new. The butt ends are a bit discolored from getting dirty & there may be a tiny crack or two on one that occurred after the end cap fell out & before I put one back in (the grip was bending over the open hole in the top of the shaft a bit). My glove palms show virtually no wear as I haven't used them with anything but the Tacki-Mak grip.

I did not use the provided tape. I went with the hairspray method & while not being super difficult, it was time consuming. If you go with hairspray, I would recommend having a towel handy because as the hairspray runs down the shaft it becomes difficult to hold on ti & wiping the stick & your hands off becomes a necessity. I also had my Dad help me with at least one & having an extra set of hands was helpful too.

Not good grip at all IMO.

Yea... I can't even imagine that working well. The only time you're going to have an issue with palm wear is if you're using cloth tape.

I hated that about cloth tape, so I used to use baby powder...then the glue balls up and becomes tacky again...more baby powder...after about four times, it feels great. Then I switched to gauze tape, it feels the same as cloth tape without the stickiness on your glove. The gauze tape also wears out faster but seems to be gentler on the palm.
