Glove advice needed.....

Recommended Posts

I've got a pair of Bauer one80 gloves, they are less than a year old and the clarino leather ( whatever the heck clarino leather is lol ) is already ripping at the base of my fingers. I'm looking for a new pair of gloves that will last. I don't mind spending $100 on gloves ( like the one80's). However, I expect equiptment at that price to last. I take care of my equiptment, so I'm a bit annoyed at the quality of Bauer right now ( I have another problem with their girdle, but thats another topic ). I play twice a week in men's leauge, so my gear isn't heavily abused.

I've read some things about the real high end gloves using softer leather and such ( for better feel ), but the result is that they don't last as long and the leather wears and tears sooner.......any truth to that?

Here's what I've been looking at

EQ50 or EQ50 elite

Stealth RS

Bauer vapor X7.0

Also, I mentioned this on a youtube post with a guy from ice warehouse .com and he recomended the vapor series and that he to had one80 supremes that are tearing. He said the vapors were made differently, but both seem to use the same "clarino leather". I'd like to get some input on current styles that seem to have good reviews ........

Any help or opinions would be appreciated

Thanks !!

Vapors aren't made differently from a Supreme glove (fit differently for sure, but quality/construction duribility is negligible). No one manufacturer makes the hands down best/most durable palms. I'm a huge fan of the MSH2 palms on my Eagle Ppf's, but from a durability standpoint, they don't last any longer than any other type of palm. Your best bet for extending the life of your gloves would first be to dry them out as fast as possible when you are done skating. Any glove will wear out really fast if left in a humid/wet hockey bag or car trunk. Next would be to use either sponge tape or either tackimac or an oggie grip. Both are much better with regards to wearing out a palm compared to regular cloth tape.

With that being said, the most effective way I have found to make your gloves last would be to get 2-3 pairs and rotate them.

real men play without palms.... just kidding but no really real men play without palms...

I havent had to buy gloves in years because i'd buy new ones and not have time to break them in so id continue to use the ones with holes in them. be that as it may if you dont care about having matching outfits get the best gloves you can afford and just keep repalming them. its cheaper in the long run. say 100 dollars or more for a glove, palm breaks down 40 bucks later new palm instead of annother hundred bucks or 75 etc...

MSH2 is absolutely more durable than any other palm on the market.

Is it the overlay or the first layer of the palm? The standard Bauer Clarino is pretty darn durable.

its the primary layer at the base, where my fingers meet the palm of my hand ( the joint area ). The reinforced palm area is holding up fine.

PS.....what the heck id MSH2 ???

Are you sure the sizing is right for you on those gloves? I have seen a couple cases where poor stitching was to blame for the problems, but I've also seen sizing problems cause tears at the base of the fingers as well. I'm a big fan of the old TPS gloves and the descendants now made for other companies. My Winwell pro stock model gloves have been working well since I got them last year and the newer Graf 75/65 series are also very nice and in your price range.

I'm a bit of a glove whore and most top end gloves have passed thru my hands over the last few years. You really have to take good care of them to make them last, airing them out after every use is really important. And what suits one person doesn't necessarily suit you, I've seen a player with good condition EQ50's after a year of use, another player killed his after 2 months use.

For all the gloves I've seen and used, Rbk HG9k from the 2010 - 2011 range (they have the damper zone on the palm) are the most durable - if you can find them. Whilst not the sweetest feeling glove on the market (4 rolls, ppfs, franchises hold this position), mine have done over 500 hours of use and are still going very strong. Another player at our club has these and he is into his 3rd year with them, no holes, tears, rips etc and like me, he plays every day.

If you are 13 inch and can wear black / red, here are some on eBay
