Laces are hurting... My hands! Any remedies?

Recommended Posts

Im sure theres not a real way to solve this, but how can i keep my hands from killing after lacing my skates. I have a lace puller, but I must be thick headed because when I try to use it on my top 3 eyelids it always seems to untie the laces.

If you're using waxed laces, ditch them pronto. Also change your laces often. In equal breath, no need to lace so tight (unless your boots are too big in the forefoot) save for the upper three or two if you choose to lace one short of the top to affect greater (needful) forward flexation.

Also, I trust you're not running a hollow deeper than 11/16th's - 12/16th's.............

Please don't take this the wrong way, it is intended to help.

First, are you sure the skates are the right size? Properly sized skates should not require uber-tight laces. They shouldn't need to be anything more than snug. If you find them slipping, try lacing the top few eyelets outside-in. They tend to hold better that way. Other than that, a lace puller is about the only way to do it without cutting your fingers. Unless you want to wear a pair of batting gloves or put tape on the parts of your fingers that get cut before you start to lace up your skates.

I find that wax laces hold better

Sorry to say it, but are your hands dry. My hands always kill through winter and this time of year because my hands are so dry and lacing skates cuts in to the sides of my fingers. if so Lotion

Especially being from Arizona this is an issue I have. I prob just need to lotion more.

Chadd, im not disrespect at all. I did tried on a ton of skates and went thru many different sizes before I settled with a pair of reebok 12k. I was told by my coach that because I'm getting better at skating then I will need to look into getting higher quality skates at some point in time to help with the stiffness. My normal shoe size is 10.5 and I got 9s. So I think there ok, for now. I just like them tight around my ankles.

And I'm 100% with you on the waxed laces.

When I was a kid, I was on the ice 7-10 times a week and as I like my skates very tight, my hands got mangled pretty good. I solved it by putting elastic sweat bands around my knuckles while tying my skates. It left my fingertips exposed for dexterity, while providing cushioning when I wrapped the laces around my hands to tighten the skate.

Part of it is personal preference. I can tie my skates kinda loose and not have much foot movement but I really like to crank on em. It just feels better when my foot is in there for good.

Right, but when those preferences are causing injuries, as in the case of the original poster, you need to reconsider those preferences.

In today's day and age of heat molded skates, there is no reason why you can't tie your skates tightly and not chew up your hands if you were fitted correctly.
