RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted June 18, 2013 Basing the Norris on things like +/-, turnovers leading to goals, etc wouldn't give you the proper winner, either. Deserving candidates are usually playing around 24-27 minutes against the oppositions top players. That many minutes against that competition, the top defensemen likely aren't going to be leading the +/- race and will probably be guilty of more giveaways simply because they're on the ice so much and facing the best the other side has to offer.The Norris has been the defensemen's scoring title for ages and I've just learned to live with it.Then do what they did with the Ted Linsday award. Have the Players vote for a second Defenceman Award and they will better be able to balance a Dman who is hard to play against, but also puts up numbers. It might be interesting to see how a players vote would differ from a (heavily) stat based vote of the writers/broadcasters.We can call the new one the Bobby Orr Award. The awards don't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things.When it comes time to negotiating a new contract I'm sure it's helpful to have a trophy or two sitting in a display case at home.
