Outdoor Game in SoCal....whaaaaa?

Recommended Posts

So I get that there was an outdoor NHL exhibition game in Las Vegas years ago but how the hell do they make ice good enough for a regular season tilt at Dodger Stadium? Forgive my ignorance but I gather that even in January it is hot-not mild-hot, in LA. I know when we had an outdoor game here in Hamilton during the winter there were concerns from the icemakers about temps getting too mild so how do they do in down south?

They don't rely on natural ice? From what I've read, the only real threat to the ice would be rain. They just have to beef up the cooling system to handle warmer temps.

yes. this is true. I work for a portable ice rink company in LA and we had a rink up for the holiday season from November to early January. It did get slushy mid day between 12-3 on the warmer days but all in all very possible.

oh by the way we used a large chiller that pumped glycol.

What are the average temperatures for that time of day? DO you have to use an enormous chiller? Why don't I have one for my house in the summer?

Daily high average is 68, low of 48 in January. The stadium is in the Chavez ravine, though so the heat builds easily.

Have you got access to at least 400 amp three-phase?

I'd like to think the NHL ice makers have access to better equipment and the know how than ice makers in Hamilton.

I believe the crew that came in to build for the AHL game were from Alberta...the same crew that did the Heritage Classic games. Mind you, mid Feb Calgary is usualy colder than Hamilton in January.

This happens to fall on my Pop's birthday exactly, I can't wait to take him to the game! He took me to my first Dodgers game there (Dodger Stadium), as well as my first Kings game at the Forum.

Go Kings Go!
