Need new skates

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am new here. I live in Hong Kong so there isn't much in the way of equipment to try on here. I currently use 2012 RBK White Ks, 11EE.

I am having a lot of trouble with lace bite due to the instep being too shallow (significantly). I don't come close to passing the pencil test. My foot bulges above the boot into the laces from the lacelock and three more eyelets down. Other than the instep the overall shape of the skate seems to fit my feet quite well except the forefoot/toe box is too deep (which I can mostly counter with tight lacing), and maybe the quarter package could be a little tighter (but is still decent).

Can anyone recommend some skates that might fit me that have an overall similar shape to the RBKs but are a decent amount deeper in the instep (and maybe a little shallower in the front)? Thanks for your time.

Does anyone have a link to a good video that accurately demonstrates how to do the pencil test? I'll be getting sized for and buying skates within the next few months.

i tried grafs, as i had the same problem but they were not deep enough for me. grafs are the deepest boots you can get, so you may have to look at custom skates, if the problem persists

OK thanks guys. I may be able to try the Nexus somewhere around here. I may be going to the US in August and if so will be in NYC and Chicago and possibly up to Toronto or Montreal. Can anyone tell me the best place to go in these cities to try on Grafs and might have my size? Even better if I can be measured for custom skates if none fit me. I would be hiring a car so can drive outside of the cities if needed.

What grafs did you try, there are several different styles? If the 709/G9 didn't have enough depth, nothing on the market will.

According to this site:

http://ccmhockey.com/en/corporate/distributors/

You have 3 CCM distributors in Hong Kong. I would bet that they have more than just CCM skates, yea? So no need to wait to go to US (unless you want something beyond the inventory of these 3 places); if the site is updated and accurate, of course.

I am in the same situation in a very non-hockey place in Asia.

Unfortunately those 3 shops are actually just one shop that doesn't have much inventory. The shop is like half shop, half someone's apartment. I think they had only 2 CCM skates and both were Jr so no way for me to try. I was lucky to get the skates that I have there. They were the only skates above size 10.

Are you going to be just in NYC or going anywhere in the tri-state area? If you happen to be going through Connecticut I can give a list of stores to check out.

Yea skates where I live only go up to 8.5 or 9, and I am 10.5. Wild stuff about the apartment, I wonder if CCM knows.

We might if we decide to drive up to Boston. A list of a few places wouldn't hurt. Thanks :)

You can't really blame them for running a shop out of an apartment here, rent in HK is insanely high and the number of customers is very small. What is most annoying about that kind of a situation is that all of these brands put shipping restrictions on their gear so that you can't order online from the US and get them sent here (without some kind of freight forwarding which makes the price really high) under the guise that we have "dealers" for their products here that we can get their gear from, when in actual fact those dealers only stock a couple of their products and only a couple of sizes. It is very frustrating.

they were the 709s and since they didnt fit properly, i went the custom route

I know this is a tad late. But I used to live in Hong Kong too. Contact Grant Phillips. He's the Bauer Distributor here. www.myhockeydoctor.com He's great, just tell him what you need, and he'll either mail you the gear or you'll pick it up at his place in Happy Valley.
